The office of the Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council was created in 1991 following restructuring of the Navajo Nation government. The Speaker is the head of the legislative branch and presides over sessions of the council. The Speaker of the council serve a term of two years during the administration of the incumbent President. Crystalyne Curley
Crystalyne Curley is an American politician serving as the 11th speaker of the Navajo Nation Council since 2023. She is the first woman to hold the position. Curley was Miss Navajo from 2011 to 2012. Life Curley is from Fish Point, Arizona. She is Tsénjíkiní and born for Tó’aheedlíinii. Her maternal grandfather is Kinyaa’áanii, and her paternal grandfather is Dził T’aadi Kinyaa’áanii. Curley graduated with two bachelor's degrees from the Arizona State University. She earned a master's in health administration from the University of New Mexico. Curley was Miss Navajo from 2011 to 2012. She ran for the Navajo Nation Council Delegate position in 2022. Crystalyne Curley is currently working in the Navajo Nation Speaker's Office. 2015 Navajo Nation Presidential Election
The 2015 Navajo Nation Presidential Election was held on April 21, 2015, with the primary on August 26, 2014. Joe Shirley Jr. and Chris Deschene advanced to the general. Originally the general election between Shirley and Deschene was to be held on Tuesday November 4, 2014. However, two former presidential candidates, Dale E. Tsosie & Hank Whitethorne, who were eliminated in the Primary election challenged Deschene's candidacy over his fluency of the Navajo Language, a requirement to run for president. 2010 Navajo Nation Presidential Election
The Navajo Nation presidential election of 2010 was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Ben Shelly won the election. The general election was held between New Mexico State Senator Lynda Lovejoy and outgoing Navajo Nation Vice President Ben Shelly. The primary election was held on August 3, 2010. Lynda Lovejoy won a plurality of the vote, becoming the first woman to do so. Ben Shelly came in second place. The primary election included nine other candidates. Buu Nygren (born December 25, 1986) is the 10th President of the Navajo Nation. Nygren-Montoya received 34,890 votes, defeating the Nez-Abeyta campaign who received 31,339 votes in the 2022 election. He was sworn in on January 10, 2023, his first political office. Nygren was born on December 25, 1986, in Blanding, Utah. He is of half Navajo and half Southern Vietnamese descent. Tuba City ( nv, ) is an unincorporated town in Coconino County, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, United States. It is the second-largest community in Coconino County. Jonathan Nez (born May 26, 1975) is the 9th and current President of the Navajo Nation. He was elected in the 2018 election after having served as Vice President from 2015 to 2019. Earlier in his career, Jonathan Nez served as a council delegate representing Tsah Bii Kin, Navajo Mountain, Shonto, & Oljato Chapters. Russell Begaye
Russell Begaye is a Navajo politician who served as the 8th president of Navajo Nation from May 2015 to January 2019. He was the second New Mexican Navajo to hold the Navajo Presidency. Early life and education Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, Begaye graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974 with a degree in political science.
