The ''sj''-sound ( ) is a voiceless fricative phoneme found in the sound system of most dialects of Swedish. It has a variety of realisations, whose precise phonetic characterisation is a matter of debate, but which usually feature distinct labialization. The sound is represented in Swedish orthography by a number of spellings, the most common of which are the digraphs and trigraphs (from which the common Swedish name for the sound is derived), , , and (before front vowels) ; if considered in complementary distribution with , up to 65 different spellings for the phoneme have been identified in native words and loanwords. Swedish orthography is the set of rules and conventions used for writing Swedish. The primary authority on Swedish orthography is ''Svenska Akademiens ordlista'' (SAOL), a spelling dictionary published by the Swedish Academy. In phonetics, vowel roundedness is the amount of rounding in the lips during the articulation of a vowel. It is labialization of a vowel. When a ''rounded'' vowel is pronounced, the lips form a circular opening, and ''unrounded'' vowels are pronounced with the lips relaxed.
