Second Schwesig Cabinet
The Second Schwesig cabinet is the incumbent state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sworn in on 15 November 2021 after Manuela Schwesig was elected as List of Minister-Presidents of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by the members of the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is the 11th Cabinet of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was formed after the 2021 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election by the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Social Democratic Party (SPD) and The Left (Germany), The Left (LINKE). Excluding the Minister-President, the cabinet comprises eight ministers. Six are members of the SPD and two are members of The Left. Manuela Schwesig (; ' Frenzel, born 23 May 1974) is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Social Democratic Party serving as List of Ministers-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 4 July 2017, becoming the first woman to serve in that post. Previously she served as Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (Germany), Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in the Third Merkel cabinet, third cabinet of Angela Merkel from 2013 to 2017. She was President of the German Bundesrat, President of the Bundesrat from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2024. Friedrich Straetmanns (born 5 August 1961) is a German politician. Born in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, he has represented The Left. Friedrich Straetmanns served as a member of the Bundestag from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2017 to 2021. Life After completing his military service, Friedrich Straetmanns studied law and political science from 1982 to 1989, including a traineeship. Till Backhaus
Till Backhaus (born Neuhaus 13 March 1959) is a German politician. As the German Democratic Republic approached its end as a standalone state, Backhaus was one of those who in December 1989 (re-)founded the Social Democratic Party, more than four decades after its suppression. More recently, in 1998 he was appointed regional Minister for Agriculture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a post he retains, making him the longest serving regional minister currently (2025) in office in Germany. Early life and career Till Backhaus was born at Neuhaus, roughly 3 km (2 miles) to the east of Elbe River which at that time marked the Inner German border dividing East from West Germany, and which through the 1950s was being increasingly fortified along its eastern bank in order to prevent people escaping from the east to the west.
