Rugby union in Greece is a minor but growing sport. Governing body The governing body is the Greek Rugby Federation or Hellas Rugby Federation (ΕΟΡ). The Hellenic Rugby Federation was set up in 2001, by those involved in rugby at the time and in 2004 at the instigation of the then Deputy Minister of Sport, George Orfanos, with the subsequent appointment of Dr Evangelos Stamos as President overthrowing the then first board (2001 - 2004). Τhe Greek government removed its administrative authority in 2014. From September 2014 to May 2023 the governing body was Hellenic Handball Federation, after the Greek Government withdrew sports representation authority from the Hellenic Rugby Federation (''Ελληνικής Ομοσπονδίας Ράγκμπι''), which was affiliated to World Rugby. The Men's Rugby World Cup is a rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams, the winners of which are recognised as the World championship, world champions of the sport. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis who, according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game and running with it. The tournament was first held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Rugby World Cup Sevens
Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWCS) was the former quadrennial world championship of rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union. Organised by World Rugby, it consisted of men's and women's tournaments, and was the highest level of competition in the sport outside of the Summer Olympics. The first tournament was held in 1993 in Scotland, and was won by England. The winners of the men's tournament were awarded the Melrose Cup, named after the Scottish town of Melrose where the first rugby sevens game was played. A women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, and was first won by Australia. After the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens, the tournament took an extended, five-year hiatus to allow the integration of rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics into the competitive calendar. IRB Sevens World Series
The SVNS, known as the HSBC SVNS for sponsorship reasons, is an annual series of international rugby sevens tournaments run by World Rugby featuring national sevens teams. Organised for the first time in the 1999–2000 season as the IRB World Sevens Series, the competition was formed to promote an elite-level of international rugby sevens and develop the game into a viable commercial product. The competition has been sponsored by banking group HSBC since 2014. The season's circuit consists of eight tournaments held in five continents, generally beginning in November or December and ending in May or June. All tournaments feature the same 12 teams. The Rugby Europe International Championships is the European Championship for tier 2 and tier 3 rugby union nations. The tournament is the latest formation of a competition with history going back to 1932. At that time, France had been expelled from the then Five Nations, and joined with a number of European teams to found an alternative organisation, the FIRA-AER, International Amateur Rugby Federation (FIRA, now Rugby Europe). While France were eventually readmitted to the Five Nations, the then FIRA-AER continued to run competitions, increasingly taking the role of organiser of European continental rugby below the Five Nations, and in which France continued to compete. Rugby league is a team sport that is relatively new to Greece. History The Greece national team was formed in 2003 by Greek Australians. Rugby league was subsequently introduced to Greece in 2006. The first match played in Greece was contested by the Olympus Eels and Attica Tigers, with the teams consisting of a mixture of local rugby union players and Greek Australians. The Greek Rugby Union Championship is the most important domestic competition of rugby union in Greece. It started in 2005 and is organised by Greek Rugby Federation. During the period that championships were held, the most titles were won by Athens RFC and one title was won by Attica Springboks RFC and one by Iraklis Rugby. The Greece national rugby union team represents one of the world's newest rugby union playing nations. The national team is governed by the HRF (Hellenic Rugby Federation). Greece has been participating in international competitions since October 2005 playing its first international game against Austria in Vienna.
