Rencontres Number
In combinatorics, the rencontres numbers are a triangular array of integers that enumerate permutations of the set with specified numbers of fixed points: in other words, partial derangements. (''Rencontre'' is French for ''encounter''. By some accounts, the problem is named after a solitaire game.) For ''n'' ≥ 0 and 0 ≤ ''k'' ≤ ''n'', the rencontres number ''D''''n'', ''k'' is the number of permutations of that have exactly ''k'' fixed points. For example, if seven presents are given to seven different people, but only two are destined to get the right present, there are ''D''7, 2 = 924 ways this could happen. In mathematics, the moments of a function are certain quantitative measures related to the shape of the function's graph. If the function represents mass density, then the zeroth moment is the total mass, the first moment (normalized by total mass) is the center of mass, and the second moment is the moment of inertia. If the function is a probability distribution, then the first moment is the expected value, the second central moment is the variance, the third standardized moment is the skewness, and the fourth standardized moment is the kurtosis. John Francis Riordan (April 22, 1903 – August 27, 1988) was an American mathematician and the author of major early works in combinatorics, particularly ''Introduction to Combinatorial Analysis'' and ''Combinatorial Identities''. Biography Riordan was a graduate of Yale University. In his early life he wrote a number of poems and essays and a book of short-stories, ''On the Make'', published in 1929, and was Editor-in-Chief of ''Salient'' and ''The Figure in the Carpet'', literary magazines published by The New School for Social Research in New York. He married Mavis McIntosh, the well-known poet and literary agent and founder of McIntosh & Otis. Oberwolfach Problem
In mathematics, the Oberwolfach problem is an open problem that may be formulated either as a problem of scheduling seating assignments for diners, or more abstractly as a problem in graph theory, on the edge cycle covers of complete graphs. It is named after the Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics, where the problem was posed in 1967 by Gerhard Ringel. It is known to be true for all sufficiently large complete graphs. Formulation In conferences held at Oberwolfach, it is the custom for the participants to dine together in a room with circular tables, not all the same size, and with assigned seating that rearranges the participants from meal to meal. In combinatorial mathematics, the Bell numbers count the possible partitions of a set. These numbers have been studied by mathematicians since the 19th century, and their roots go back to medieval Japan. In an example of Stigler's law of eponymy, they are named after Eric Temple Bell, who wrote about them in the 1930s.
