Regional Employers Organisation
There are nine regional employers organisations in England, corresponding to the regions of England, and one each for Wales and Northern Ireland. Structure They represents the interests of local authorities as major employers, specialising in human resources, organisational development and employee relations. In most cases they are integrated into the Local Government Association's regional bodies, although some have a distinct identities or have continued exist where there is no longer a regional body. Each is a member of the National Association of Regional Employers. Regions Of England
The regions of England, formerly known as the government office regions, are the highest tier of sub-national division in England. They were established in 1994 and follow the 1974–96 county borders. They are a continuation of the former 1940s Historical and alternative regions of England#Standard statistical regions, standard regions which followed the 1889–1974 administrative county borders. Between 1994 and 2011, all nine regions had partly devolved functions; they no longer fulfil this role, continuing to be used for limited statistical purposes. While the UK was a member of the European Union, they defined areas (European Parliament constituencies in the United Kingdom, constituencies) for the purposes of elections to the European Parliament. North East Regional Employers' Organisation
The North East Regional Employers' Organisation, previously the Association of North East Councils is a partnership body made up of representatives of local authorities in North East England. It acts as the regional employers organisation. In April 2009 it assumed the role of the regional Local Authority Leaders’ Board following the abolition of the North East Assembly. Northern Ireland Local Government Association
The Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) represents the interests of local government in Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland Local Government Association was established in 2001 to represent the interests of local government in Northern Ireland and has had a specific role in representing local government to the Northern Ireland Executive and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Its members are the 11 local authorities in Northern Ireland. The NILGA considers that its primary purposes are to promote better local government and the reputation of local government, and to support local authorities in the development of policies and priorities which will improve public services and democracy. Welsh Local Government Association
The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA; , CLlLC) represents the interests of local authorities in Wales. It is affiliated with the Local Government Association for England and Wales and acts as Wales’ regional employers organisation. History The Welsh Local Government Association was established in 1996 to represent the interests of local government in Wales. Since 1999 the WLGA has had a specific role in representing local government to the Welsh Government and the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). West Midlands Employers
The West Midlands Employers are a regional grouping of local authorities in the West Midlands region of England. It was originally established as the Local Authority Leaders’ Board for the West Midlands region of England around 2010. South West Councils
South West Councils is an association of council leaders from the South West of England. It is a regional grouping of the Local Government Association and the regional employers organisation. It was established in May 2009 following the abolition of the South West Regional Assembly. South East Employers
South East Councils (SEC) is a voluntary association of council leaders from the 70 local authorities in the South East region of England. It is a regional grouping affiliated to the Local Government Association. It was established following the abolition of the South East England Regional Assembly in March 2009. From April 2009 to 2010 it had a statutory role in regional planning. North West Employers
North West Employers, previously known as the North West Regional Leaders Board, is the Local Authority Leaders’ Board for the North West region of England. It was established on 15 July 2008 and replaced the North West Regional Assembly. It was initially based at Wigan, in Greater Manchester but has since moved to St Helens in Merseyside. Structure and membership The board has 23 members of which 15 represent local government in the region and the remainder are drawn from business and the third sector. Three local government representatives will be drawn from each Ceremonial County in the region i.e., Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester. London Councils
London Councils is the collective of local government in Greater London, England. It is a cross-party organisation that represents London's 32 borough councils and the City of London. It was formed in 1995 as a merger of the London Boroughs Association and the Association of London Authorities. Local government is a generic term for the lowest tiers of governance or public administration within a particular sovereign state. East Midlands Councils
East Midlands Councils is a consultative forum for local government in the East Midlands region of England. It is a regional grouping of the Local Government Association and the regional employers organisation. It was established in April 2010 as a consequence of the dissolution of the former East Midlands Regional Assembly.
