Rathskeller
Ratskeller (German: "council's cellar", pl. ''Ratskeller'', historically ''Rathskeller'') is a name in German-speaking countries for a bar or restaurant located in the basement of a city hall (''Rathaus'') or nearby. Many taverns, nightclubs, bars and similar establishments throughout the world use the term. Notable examples Germany The Bremen Ratskeller, erected in 1405, has one of the oldest wine cellars in Germany and was a centre of the wine trade in Bremen. The Ratskeller in Lübeck is one of the oldest in northern Germany, with parts dating from the Romanesque era. The earliest documented use for wine storage dates from circa 1220. The Rathskeller
The Rathskeller (known as The Rat) was a live music venue in Boston that was open from 1974 to 1997. It was considered the "granddaddy" of Boston rock venues. During its heyday, the Rat hosted such acts as the Cars, the Pixies, Metallica, Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, Talking Heads, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr., The Replacements (band), The Replacements, the Police, and Soundgarden. From 1980 to 1987, The Hoodoo BBQ, which ''Esquire (magazine), Esquire'' called one of the "100 Best Restaurants in America"—was located at The Rat. In the 1960s the Rat was a restaurant and bar catering to college students. The Athenæum, originally named ''Das Deutsche Haus'' (German language, German: "The German House"), is the most ornate and best-preserved building affiliated with the German American community of Indianapolis. Once used as a German American ''Turnverein'' and wikt:clubhouse, clubhouse, it currently houses many groups, organizations, and businesses. The Athenæum is located across Massachusetts Avenue, Indianapolis, Massachusetts Avenue from the Old National Centre. California Hall (San Francisco, California)
California Hall, originally named Das Deutsche Haus ( English: ''The German House'', sometimes also referred to in incorrect German as Das Deutsches Haus), is a historic commercial building and event venue built in 1912, located in the Polk Gulch/ Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It started as a German social meeting hall. In 1965, it was the location of a fundraiser event for gay charities that brought trouble with the police and an ensuing legal battle. This event has been described a turning point in gay rights in the west coast. In the mid-1960s and 1970s, it was a popular concert hall; performers that played at the California Hall include Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Grateful Dead, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Metallica
Metallica is an American heavy metal band.
