The Chad, Republic of Chad is divided into 23 provinces. Chad was divided into regions in 2002. It was previously divided into prefectures of Chad, prefectures, and then departments of Chad, departments. On , a new ordinance divided Chad into 23 provinces, 107 departments, and 377 communes. The names of the former regions remained the same but were now called . On , a new ordinance further divided the 23 regions into 120 departments and 454 sub-prefectures. Ennedi-Est (region)
Ennedi Est () is one of the twenty-three provinces of Chad. The capital and largest city of the province is Amdjarass. History It was established on September 4, 2012 from part of the former Ennedi Region. It appears to cover the same territory as the former Ennedi Est Department. From 1960 to 1999, the province was part of the Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Prefecture, and until 2008 was the Ennedi Est Department in the region of the same name. From 2008 to 2012, the province was part of the Ennedi Region as the Wadi Hawar department until the Ennedi Region was divided. Geography The province is situated in the far northeast of Chad. Baguirmi Department
Baguirmi () is a department of Chad, one of three in the Chari-Baguirmi Region. It takes its name from the kingdom of Baguirmi. Its capital is Massenya. Geography The surface of the department, which lies about above sea-level, is almost flat with a very slight inclination north to Lake Chad. It forms part of what seems to be the basin of an immense lake, of which Chad is the remnant. The soil is clay. Numerous tributaries of the river Chari River flow through the department, but much of the water is absorbed by swamps and sand-obstructed channels, and seasons of drought are recurrent. The southern part of the district is the most fertile. Under French colonial rule the capital was Chekna, on a tributary of the Chari. Fort Lamy (actually N'Djamena) at the confluence of the Logone and Chari, and Fort de Cointet on the middle Shari, were French outposts around which towns grew. Massenya
Massenya () is a small town located in the central-western part of Chad. It is the capital of the Chari-Baguirmi province and of the department of Baguirmi. Founded in the first half of the 16th century, Massenya was also the historical capital of the Kingdom of Baguirmi and the seat of the Mbang, or Sultan. It lies in the northwest of the Massenya Plain, an important wetland in the Sahel, which has been under the protection of the Ramsar Convention since 2008, and also located on the banks of the Chari River. The town is served by Massenya Airport. The town is divided into three districts. The Bagirmi district hosts the main market and the residence of the Bagirmi mbang. The Haussa district was founded by the Arab religious leader Gombo Mahamat Oumar Abakar, a close friend of Mbang Gaourang from Nigeria, who became the imam of the great mosque until his death. Chari-Baguirmi () is one of the 23 provinces of Chad. Its capital is Massenya. It is composed of part of the former Chari-Baguirmi Prefecture ( sub-prefectures of Massenya and Bousso) and parts of the sub-prefecture of N'Djamena). History The region was the historic heartland of the Sultanate of Bagirmi, which ruled much of the area from its capital in Massenya from the late 15th - late 19th centuries. Geography The province borders Hadjer-Lamis Region to the north, Guéra Region to the east, Moyen-Chari Region to the southeast, Tandjilé Region to the south, and Mayo-Kebbi Est Region, N'Djamena and Cameroon to the west. Borkou () is one of two departments of Chad, departments of the Borkou Region in Chad . It was established by Ordinance No. 002/PR/08 of 19 February 2008. Its capital is Faya-Largeau. Bourkou was formerly one of four departments in the Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region of Chad, in the northern Saharan territory of Borkou. In 2008 the Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region was split into three, and the former Bourkou department became a Borkou Region, separate region under the same name.
