Provinces Of Greece
The provinces of Greece (, "eparchy") were sub-divisions of some the country's prefectures of Greece, prefectures. From 1887, the provinces were abolished as actual administrative units, but were retained for some state services, especially financial and educational services, as well as for electoral purposes. Before the Second World War, there were 139 provinces, and after the war, with the addition of the Dodecanese, Dodecanese Islands, their number grew to 148. According to the Article 7 of the Code of Prefectural Self-Government (Presidential Decree 30/1996), the provinces constituted a "particular administrative district" within the wider "administrative district" of the prefectures. Serres ( ) is a city in Macedonia, Greece, capital of the Serres regional unit and second largest city in the region of Central Macedonia, after Thessaloniki. Serres is one of the administrative and economic centers of Northern Greece. The city is situated in a fertile plain at an elevation of about , some northeast of the Strymon river and north-east of Thessaloniki, respectively. Serres' official municipal population was 70,703 in 2021. Serres Prefecture
Serres () is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Serres. The total population reaches just over 150,000. Geography The mountains are Orvelos to the north, Menoikio to the east, Pangaio to the southeast, Kerdylio to the southwest, Vertiskos to the west, parts of Krousi to the west and portions of the Kerkini lies to the northwest. The regional unit borders on Thessaloniki to the southwest, Kilkis to the west, North Macedonia with the Novo Selo Municipality to the northwest, the Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria to the north, Drama to the northeast and Kavala to the east. Emmanouel Pappas
Emmanouel Pappas (; 1772 – 5 December 1821) was a prominent member of Filiki Eteria and leader of the Greek War of Independence in Macedonia. Biography Emmanouil Pappas was born in Dovista, a village which is now named after him. Son of a priest, Pappas excelled in commerce and banking, not only in Macedonia, but also in Europe, establishing trading posts in Constantinople, Vienna and Budapest, despite the limited education he received. As one of the founding members of Filiki Etaireia, after the outbreak of the War, Pappas dedicated his fortune to organising and financing guerrilla troops. In March 1821, he tried to coordinate his actions in eastern Macedonia with Anastasios Karatasos, a rebel leader in western Macedonia, hoping to unite the revolution across the region, but their actions were not well synchronized, and had little success. Irakleia (, before 1926: Τζουμαγιά - ''Tzoumagia'') is a municipality in the Serres regional unit, Central Macedonia, Greece. Population 21,145 (2011).
