President Of Vanuatu
The president of Vanuatu () is the head of state of Vanuatu. The president is elected for a five-year term by an electoral college consisting of Parliament and the presidents of the regional councils. The president's role is mostly ceremonial. The Constitution grants the president the ability to appoint the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Vanuatu, and three other justices. In case of vacancy, the speaker of the Parliament will be the acting president of Vanuatu. From 1906 to 1980 the resident commissioners of the New Hebrides were British and French colonial officials. From 1887 to 1906 the New Hebrides was led by Anglo-French joint naval commissioners. The current president is Nikenike Vurobaravu, since 23 July 2022. Nikenike Vurobaravu
Nikenike Vurobaravu (born 3 December 1951) is a Vanuatuan diplomat and politician who has served as President of Vanuatu since 23 July 2022. Previously having been employed in numerous diplomatic and government positions, including as the first resident High Commissioner to Fiji, he was elected as president during the eighth round of the 2022 Vanuatuan presidential election in July 2022. He is a member of the Vanua'aku Pati (VP) political party. Biography Vurobaravu is married to Rima Vurobaravu. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Fiji in 1977. Vurobaravu also obtained his Master of Arts degree in diplomatic studies from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom in 1993. Alfred Maseng
Alfred Maseng Nalo (10 January 1949 – 18 November 2004) was a Vanuatuan politician. He served as List of Speakers of the Parliament of Vanuatu, speaker of the Parliament from December 1991 to November 1995, and foreign minister from 1995 until 1996. He was also the president of Vanuatu for two brief periods lasting about a month each, during 1994 and 2004. Esmon Saimon
Esmon Esai Saimon, also referred to as Esmon Sae (born 28 October 1955), is a Vanuatuan politician. From 11 February 2016 to 6 September 2019 he was Speaker of the Parliament, and in that role from 17 June 2017 to 6 July 2017 served as the acting president of Vanuatu upon the death of Baldwin Lonsdale. Career He worked first as Secretary to the South West Bay Cooperative Society, from 1978 to 1982, then went into private business (in "retail and fishing") until 1998. Baldwin Jacobson Lonsdale (5 August 1948 – 17 June 2017) was a Vanuatuan politician and Anglican priest who served as the president of Vanuatu from 22 September 2014 until his death in 2017. Early life and career Lonsdale was born on Mota Lava, in the Banks Islands, in 1948. Iolu Johnson Abil (born 17 February 1942) is a Vanuatuan politician. He was elected and sworn in as the president of Vanuatu on 2 September 2009. Biography Personal life Abbil is from Tanna island, which is located in Vanuatu's southernmost Tafea Province. He was born in the village of Louaneai on Tanna in the New Hebrides in 1942 to parents George Yaviniau and Nassuaiu. His father originally owned his own store, but closed the business after Iolu later suggested the family join a business cooperative. Abbil holds the chiefly title of ''Yaniniko'', which means chief's spokesman on the island of Tanna. Maxime Carlot Korman (born 26 April 1941) is a Vanuatuan politician, formerly serving as the speaker of the Parliament and formerly as acting president. Kalkot Mataskelekele Mauliliu (born 24 April 1949) is a Vanuatuan politician who served as the president of Vanuatu from 16 August 2004 to 16 August 2009. Biography He was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne the University of Papua New Guinea. He is a lawyer from the national capital, Port Vila, and is the first Head of State of Vanuatu to have a university degree. Josias Moli
Josias Moli (born 19 August 1954) is a Vanuatuan politician who served as speaker of the Parliament of Vanuatu and acting president of Vanuatu. Biography He succeeded Roger Abiut in both positions. He is a member of the Union of Moderate Parties and was elected speaker of parliament after Abiut was defeated in parliamentary elections earlier in July 2004.
