Powwow
A powwow (also pow wow or pow-wow) is a gathering with dances held by many Native Americans in the United States, Native American and First Nations in Canada, First Nations communities. Inaugurated in 1923, powwows today are an opportunity for Indigenous people to socialize, dance, sing, and honor their cultures. Powwows may be private or public, indoors or outdoors. Dancing events can be competitive with monetary prizes. Powwows vary in length from single-day to weeklong events. In mainstream American culture, such as 20th-century Western movies or by military personnel, the term ''powwow'' was used to refer to any type of meeting. This usage is now considered by some Native Americans to be an offensive case of Cultural appropriation, appropriation because of the cultural significance powwows hold. Cozad Singers
The Cozad Singers are a Kiowa drum group from Anadarko, Oklahoma. The group was founded by Leonard Cozad, Sr. in the 1930s, and consists of Leonard, his sons, grandsons, and other members of the family. Cozad, as they are commonly known, are southern style pow-wow and Gourd Dance, gourd drum, and have released several albums. They performed on the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album winning ''Gathering of Nations Pow Wow'' album, along with 15 other drum groups. Their most recent album, ''California Pow Wow'', was released by SOAR Records in June, 2004 in music, 2004, and won the 2005 Native American Music Award for Best Historical Recording. Gourd Dance
The Gourd Dance is a Kiowa dance and song tradition that has become popular at modern powwows in southwestern Oklahoma. Origin legends Many Native Americans dispute the origin of the legend of the Gourd Dance. A Kiowa story recounts the tale of a young man who had been separated from the rest of the tribe. Hungry and dehydrated after many days of travel, the young man approached a hill and heard an unusual kind of singing coming from the other side. There he saw a red wolf singing and dancing on its hind legs. The man listened to the songs all afternoon and through the night and when morning came, the wolf spoke to him and told him to take the dance and songs back to the Kiowa people. The "howl" at the end of each gourd dance song is a tribute to the red wolf. The Kiowa Gourd Dance was once part of the Kiowa Sun Dance ceremony. The Black Lodge Singers of White Swan, Washington are a Native American northern drum group led by Kenny ScabbyRobe, of the Blackfeet Nation. The Black Lodge Singers are largely drawn from his twelve sons. They have released twenty albums for Canyon Records, including two albums of pow wow songs for children. Narragansett Language
Narragansett is an Algonquian language formerly spoken in most of what is today Rhode Island by the Narragansett people. It was closely related to the other Algonquian languages of southern New England like Massachusett and Mohegan-Pequot. The earliest study of the language in English was by Roger Williams, founder of the Rhode Island colony, in his book '' A Key Into the Language of America'' (1643). Name The word ''narragansett'' means, literally, '(people) of the small point'. The "point" may be located on the Salt Pond in Washington County. Mandaree Singers
Mandaree ( Hidatsa: Adixoodagoorahareesh) is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKenzie County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 691 at the 2020 census, up from 596 in 2010. Mandaree is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation. It was founded in 1954 as a home for those displaced by the rising backwaters of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River. The name was suggested by a Catholic missionary on the reservation and is a portmanteau of the names of the three tribes: ''MAN''dan, Hi''DA''tsa, and ''REE'', another name for the Arikara. Mandaree is the primary physical center of the Mandan-Hidatsa community. Yellowhammer
The yellowhammer (''Emberiza citrinella'') is a passerine bird in the Emberiza, bunting family that is native to Palearctic, Eurasia and has been introduced species, introduced to New Zealand and Australia. Most European birds remain in the breeding range year-round, but the eastern subspecies is partially bird migration, migratory, with much of the population wintering further south. The male yellowhammer has a bright yellow head, streaked brown back, chestnut rump, and yellow under parts. Other plumages are duller versions of the same pattern. The yellowhammer is common in open areas with some shrubs or trees, and forms small flocks in winter. Its song has a rhythm like "A little bit of bread and no cheese". The song is very similar to that of its closest relative, the pine bunting, with which it interbreeds.
