Poverty In The Philippines
Despite improvements in recent years, poverty in the Philippines remains high, and the pace of poverty reduction has been slower compared to other East Asian countries. Economic growth in the Philippines was less inclusive and slower than in high-performing neighbors, resulting in a lag in poverty reduction. Between 2006 and 2015, the country's poverty rate, measured by the international poverty line (US$1.90/day), declined by only 0.9 percentage points annually, compared to 2–2.5 percentage points in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. When measured by the lower-middle-income-class poverty line (US$3.20/day), poverty declined by just 1.3 percentage points annually, while same three countries saw reductions of 3–5 percentage points. Poverty reduction, poverty relief, or poverty alleviation is a set of measures, both economic and humanitarian, that are intended to permanently lift people out of poverty. Measures, like those promoted by Henry George in his economics classic ''Progress and Poverty'', are those that raise, or are intended to raise, ways of enabling the poor to create wealth for themselves as a conduit of ending poverty forever. In modern times, various economists within the Georgism movement propose measures like the land value tax to enhance access to the natural world for all. Poverty occurs in both developing countries and developed countries. While poverty is much more widespread in developing countries, both types of countries undertake poverty reduction measures. Poverty has been historically accepted in some parts of the world as inevitable as non-industrialized economies produced very little, while populations grew almost as fast, making wealth scarce. Global Hunger Index
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool that attempts to measure and track hunger globally as well as by region and by country, prepared by European NGOs of Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. The GHI is calculated annually, and its results appear in a report issued in October each year. The 2024 Global Hunger Index shows that progress in combating global hunger remains inadequate. Though some countries have made headway, the 2024 GHI score for the world is 18.3, which is considered moderate, and is down only slightly from the 2016 score of 18.8. Hunger is highest in the regions of Africa South of the Sahara and South Asia, both of which have scores reflecting hunger in the serious category.
