The of the Empire of Japan comprised numerous police services, in many cases with overlapping jurisdictions. History and background During the Tokugawa bakufu (1603–1867), police functions in Japan operated through appointed town magistrates of ''samurai'' status, who served simultaneously as chiefs of police, prosecutors and judges. Satsuma Rebellion
The Satsuma Rebellion, also known as the , was a revolt of disaffected samurai against the new imperial government of the Empire of Japan, nine years into the Meiji era.
