Performance Space
Performance Space, later Performance Space at Carriageworks, is an arts organisation based in Sydney, Australia, that develops and presents interdisciplinary arts and experimental theatre. History Performance Space was established in 1983 in a venue in Cleveland St, Redfern (known as Cleveland Street Performance Space from 1980 until 1983), with Christopher Allen as its manager. The building was formerly the State Rail Authority Trade Union Dance Hall. In April 1987, the newly-formed performance group The Sydney Front performed ''Waltz'', composed by Sarah de Jong, directed by Nigel Kellaway, and featuring Roz Hervey, at the Performance Space. In 2007 the Performance Space moved to the Carriageworks contemporary multi-arts centre, when the company became known as Performance Space at Carriageworks. The Sydney Front
The Sydney Front was an Australian performance group in existence between 1986 and 1993, with one return performance in 2004. Based in Sydney, New South Wales, they toured Australia and internationally. They became known internationally with their 1989 work ''The Pornography of Performance''. History The Sydney Front was formed in 1986, and was particularly known for integrating the audience into their productions. Premiering many of their works at the Performance Space, Sydney, they toured the UK, Europe and Hong Kong. Their work ''The Pornography of Performance'' became a cause célèbre when it was performed at London's Riverside Studios. Experimental Theatre
Experimental theatre (also known as avant-garde theatre), inspired largely by Richard Wagner, Wagner's concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, began in Western theatre in the late 19th century with Alfred Jarry and his Ubu Roi, Ubu plays as a rejection of both the age in particular and, in general, the dominant ways of writing and producing plays. The term has shifted over time as the mainstream theatre world has adopted many forms that were once considered radical. Like other forms of the avant-garde, it was created as a response to a perceived general cultural crisis. Despite different political and formal approaches, all avant-garde theatre opposes bourgeois theatre. It tries to introduce a different use of language and the Human body, body to change the mode of perception and to create a new, more active relation with the audience. The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is a public art gallery located in the Judith Wright Arts Centre in the Brisbane inner-city suburb of Fortitude Valley, which features contemporary artworks and showcases emerging artists in a series of group and solo exhibitions. Carriageworks
Carriageworks is a multi-arts urban cultural precinct located at the former Eveleigh Carriage Workshops in Redfern, New South Wales, Redfern, Sydney, Australia. Carriageworks showcases contemporary art and performing arts, as well as being used for filming, festivals, fairs and commercial exhibitions. Roz Hervey
Roz Hervey (1965 or 1966 – 8 November 2024) was an Australian dancer, choreographer, director and theatrical producer. She was known for roles as co-founder of and associate artist with Sydney dance-theatre company Force Majeure, as director of the Adelaide Fringe parade from 2013 until 2016, and finally, from around 2013, as creative director of Restless Dance Theatre in Adelaide, South Australia. She also worked with many other theatre and dance companies, as well as festivals and other events. State Rail Authority
The State Rail Authority, a former statutory authority of the Government of New South Wales, operated and maintained railways in the Australian state of New South Wales from July 1980 until December 2003. History The ''Transport Authorities Act 1980'' separated the functions of the Public Transport Commission (formerly responsible for all public transport) and established the State Rail Authority. The State Rail Authority assumed responsibility for trains, while the Urban Transit Authority responsibility for buses and ferries.
