Para-gymnastics
Para-gymnastics, also known as disability gymnastics and para gymnastics, is a discipline of gymnastics for disabled athletes. It was recognized as an official Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) discipline in October 2024. History The Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) maintained a Gymnastics for All committee. In 2018, they expanded the Gymnastics for All program by forming an alliance of gymnastics federations. Countries such as the United States have held team competitions teams of athletes with disabilities, while countries like Great Britain have held championships for individual competitors. In October 2024, FIG recognized para-gymnastics as an official FIG discipline. FIG defined the discipline as "Competitive Gymnastics performed on different pieces of apparatus for those gymnasts with approved Para classification," and approved it for artistic gymnastics. Parasports
Parasports are sports played by people with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities. Some parasports are forms of adapted physical activities from existing non-disabled sports, while others have been specifically created for persons with a disability and do not have a non-disabled equivalent. Disability exists in four categories: physical, mental, permanent and temporary. At a competitive level, disability sport classifications are applied to allow people of varying abilities to face similar opposition. Etymology The term "parasports" arose as a portmanteau of the words paraplegic and sports. Other terms for the concept include adapted sports, adaptive sports, disability sports, and disabled sports. Disability Sport Classification
Disability sports classification is a system that allows for fair competition between people with different types of disabilities. Historically, the process has been overseen by 2 groups: specific disability type sport organizations that cover multiple sports, and specific sport organizations that cover multiple disability types including amputations, cerebral palsy, deafness, intellectual impairments, les autres and short stature, vision impairments, spinal cord injuries, and other disabilities not covered by these groups. Within specific disability types, some of the major organizations have been: CPISRA for cerebral palsy and head injuries, ISMWSF for spinal cord injuries, ISOD for orthopaedic conditions and amputees, INAS for people with intellectual disabilities, and IBSA for blind and vision impaired athletes. Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games or Paralympics is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of disability, disabilities. There are Winter Paralympic Games, Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, have been held shortly after the corresponding Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympics began as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in Stoke Mandeville Games, 1948. Jennifer Bricker
Jennifer Bricker-Bauer (born Jennifer Bricker, October 1, 1987) is an American acrobatics, acrobat, aerialist, and memoirist. Born without legs, she was placed for adoption by her parents. She is the sister of American Olympic gymnast Dominique Moceanu, although the two were unaware they were biological siblings until later in life. Career Bricker grew up competing in gymnastics alongside teammates who did not have disabilities. At age of 10, she competed in the Junior Olympics. In 1998, Bricker competed in the AAU Junior Olympics (power tumbling), placing fourth. The same year she received the U.S. Tumbling Association’s Inspiration Award. She was the first disabled high school tumbling (gymnastics), tumbling champion in the state of Illinois. Alexander Thomas Harry Buesnel (born 8 October 1992) is a British artistic gymnast. He is a ten-time British Disability Gymnastics Champion as well as a gold medalist in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece. He was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, and started his gymnastics career in 2004 under the Jersey Special Gymnastics Club founder John Grady .
