Palingsound
Palingsound (; 'European eel sound') is the unique musical sound attributed to a subgenre of Dutch pop music called palingpop ('Eel Pop'). 'Palingsound' is also frequently used as a synonym for the genre palingpop as a whole. The term references the origin of many of the artists making music this way, the (eel) fisherman's town of Volendam. Palingsound refers to a smooth melodic and sometimes sentimental sound, with close vocal harmonies, combined with matching arrangements and a studio mixing style. History Origin The Cats (1964 -1985) are universally recognized as the originators of palingsound. Nick & Simon
Nick & Simon were a Dutch singer-songwriter duo composed of Simon Keizer and Nick Schilder. They became popular in their home country the Netherlands in 2006. Their album ''Luister'' (''Listen'') reached double platinum status in four months. In June 2011 they tried to find "the American Dream" in their TV documentary show, ''Nick & Simon, The American Dreamteam''. Nick made his first TV appearance on the show ''Idols (Netherlands), Idols'', the Dutch version of ''Idol (TV series), Idol'', where he finished in 11th place. Shortly after, Nick and Simon began to perform together. They were the most booked artists in the Netherlands in 2007. The duo were coaches in the first three seasons of ''The Voice of Holland''. Volendam () is a tourist town in the Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality of Edam-Volendam, Provinces of the Netherlands, province of North Holland, Netherlands, known for its streets, old fishing boats and the traditional clothing worn by some residents. The Cats (Dutch Band)
The Cats were a Dutch rock music, rock band formed in Volendam in 1964. They were active (with a few interruptions) from 1964 until 1985 and had their most successful period from 1968 until 1975. Of the many hits the band had at home and abroad, the biggest one is "One Way Wind (Cats song), One Way Wind", which was released in 38 countries and a top ten number in several of them, of which it was a number one in Switzerland. The European eel (''Anguilla anguilla'') is a species of eel. Their life history was a mystery for thousands of years, and mating in the wild has not yet been observed. Joost Den Draaijer
Willem van Kooten (; 7 January 1941 – 3 January 2025) was a Dutch businessman and radio DJ under the name Joost den Draaijer (). He was born in Hilversum. Life and career At the age of 19, Van Kooten joined offshore radio station Radio Veronica in 1960 as a writer of jingles and commercials. Later he became a DJ and program director. He used the pseudonym Joost den Draaijer, which was a pun on playing records ("draaien" is Dutch for "play"; literally his pseudonym means ''Joost the Player''). In 1964 he initiated Veronica's Top 40, the first weekly pop chart in the Netherlands which quickly became Veronica's most listened-to show. Jan Smit (born 31 December 1985) is a Dutch singer, television host, and actor. Smit mostly sings songs in the Dutch language, in a genre known as palingsound.
