Overthrow Of The Hawaiian Monarchy
The Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown in a ''coup d'état'' against Queen Liliʻuokalani that took place on January 17, 1893, on the island of Oahu. The coup was led by the Committee of Safety, composed of seven foreign residents (five Americans, one Scotsman, and one German) and six Hawaiian Kingdom subjects of American descent in Honolulu. The Committee prevailed upon American minister John L. Stevens to call in the US Marines to protect the national interest of the United States of America. The insurgents established the Republic of Hawaii, but their ultimate goal was the annexation of the islands to the United States, which occurred in 1898. USS Boston (1884)
The fifth USS ''Boston'' was a protected cruiser and one of the first steel warships of the "New Navy" of the 1880s. In some references she is combined with as the ''Atlanta'' class, in others as the ''Boston'' class. Liliʻuokalani
Queen Liliʻuokalani (; Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha; September 2, 1838 – November 11, 1917) was the only queen regnant and the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruling from January 29, 1891, until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893. The composer of "Aloha ʻOe" and numerous other works, she wrote her autobiography ''Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, Hawaiʻi's Story by Hawaiʻi's Queen'' (1898) during her imprisonment following the overthrow. The Gatling gun is a rapid-firing multiple-barrel firearm invented in 1861 by Richard Jordan Gatling of North Carolina. It is an early machine gun and a forerunner of the modern electric motor-driven rotary cannon. ʻIolani Barracks
Iolani Barracks, or ''hale koa'' (house [of] warriors); in Hawaiian, was built in 1870, designed by the architect Theodore Heuck, under the direction of Kamehameha V, King Lot Kapuaiwa. Located directly adjacent to 'Iolani Palace, Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu, it housed about 80 members of the monarch's Royal Guard until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy, Monarchy in 1893. ʻIolani Palace
The Iolani Palace () was the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi beginning with Kamehameha III under the Kamehameha Dynasty (1845) and ending with Queen Liliʻuokalani (1893) under the Kalākaua Dynasty.
