Oss () is a municipality and a city in the southern Netherlands, in the province of North Brabant, situated between Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch. Pope Alexander II
Pope Alexander II (1010/1015 – 21 April 1073), born Anselm of Baggio, was the head of the Roman Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 1061 to his death in 1073. Born in Milan, Anselm was deeply involved in the Pataria reform movement. Elected according to the terms of his predecessor's bull, ''In nomine Domini'', Anselm's was the first election by the cardinals without the participation of the people and minor clergy of Rome. He also authorized the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Early life and work Anselm was born in the parish of Cesano Boscone in the town of Corsico some 7 km (5 mi) from Milan of a noble family. Vorstengraf (Oss)
The Vorstengraf (''grave of the king'') in Oss is one of the largest burial mounds in the Netherlands and Belgium. The hill was 3 metres high and had a diameter of 54 metres. First, second and third Vorstengraf In 1933, the so-called Vorstengraf was uncovered during the construction of a trailer park on the heath. It contained a bronze bucket containing a curved iron sword from 700 BC. The find was transferred to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. The site of the hill was later a junkyard. The mound is now partly restored, a portion of the circumference of the hill is marked with poles. In 2009, a second Vorstengraf was discovered a few hundred metres from the first Vorstengraf. The finds from this tomb are displayed in the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss. In 2011, it was announced that a third ''Vorstengraf'' was discovered in Uden. Macharen
Macharen is a village in the southern part of the Netherlands, in the province North Brabant. It is part of the Oss municipality. The village was first mentioned in 1107 as Machera, and means "suitable sandy ridge". The Catholic St Petrus Bandenkerk was built between 1862 and 1867, however the tower dates from the 15th century. Macharen was home to 389 people in 1840. Lith, North Brabant
Lith () is a village in the province North Brabant in the Netherlands. Before 2011, there was also a municipality; since 2011 Lith is a part of Oss. History Lith was first mentioned in 1202 as Litte. The etymology is unknown. Lith developed on a fordable location on the Maas. A harbour has been known to exist at Lith since 968. Originally it was part of the Duchy of Brabant. Later it became part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. In 1672, it was conquered by the Dutch Republic. The Dutch Reformed church dated from the Middle Ages, but was destroyed by a V-1 flying bomb in 1945. The church was rebuilt in 1953. The Catholic St Lambertus Church was built 1899 and 1900 and has a slender needle spire. The grist mill Zeldenrust was built around 1800. Haren is a village in the municipality of Oss in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands. The village was first mentioned in 1191 as "Egenus de Haren", and means "sandy ridge". The chapel of the monastery of the Sisters of St. Francis was built in 1520. The monastery is surrounded by a moat and was buildings from the 17th century. The Catholic St Lambertus Church was built between 1867 and 1868 in Gothic Revival style. Haren was home to 485 people in 1840. Berghem
Berghem (older spelling: ''Berchem'') is a town in the Dutch municipality of Oss. It is located about 4 km northeast of Oss itself. History The village was first mentioned in 1286 as Berchem, and means "settlement on a hill". The Catholic St Willibrordus Church has been built between 1900 and 1903 adjacent to a 15th century tower. The medieval was replaced in 1858, but burnt down in 1895.
