Jan Frans van Bloemen (baptized 12 May 1662 - buried 13 June 1749)Vici 1974, pp. 222, 225. was a Flemish landscape painter mainly active in Rome. Here he was able to establish himself as the leading painter of views (vedute) of the Roman countryside depicted in the aesthetic of the classical landscape tradition.Hills 2013. Life Born in Antwerp, Jan Frans van Bloemen was a younger brother of Pieter van Bloemen. He likely trained with his brother. Between 1681 and 1684, he was in his native Antwerp a pupil of Anton Goubau, a painter of market scenes and bamboccianti (low-life) subjects situated in Roman or Mediterranean settings.Bowron & Rishel 2000, pp. 331-334. Placido Costanzi
Placido Costanzi (1702–1759) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period. Placido Costanzi was born in 1702 to a family of gem-makers in Rome. He was exposed to art at a very young age, and became a pupil of Benedetto Luti and painted mainly historical and devotional subjects. He painted a ''St. Camillus'' in Santa Maria Maddalena in Florence, in which he has aspired to the imitation of Domenichino. Many of his works decorate Rome's churches. His ''Resuscitation of Tabitha'' in Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri replicates a mosaic in St. Peter's Basilica. He also painted in fresco the ceilings of the tribunes in Santa Maria in Vallicella and San Gregorio, and was much employed in painting figures in the landscapes of other artists, particularly in those of Jan Frans van Bloemen (also known as "Orizzonte", which means horizon in Italian). Nicolò Bonito
Nicolò Bonito (died 1740 in Naples) was an Italian painter, depicting mainly landscapes. Biography Bonito left Naples as a young man for Livorno where he met the landscape artist, Gioachinno Beich (Franz Joachim Beich). When Beich left for Germany, Bonito moved to Rome under Orizzonte (Jan Frans van Bloemen). Gabrielle Ricciardelli
Gabriele Ricciardelli (born c. 1690, flourished c. 1743– c. 1777 or 1782), was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in depicting landscapes. Biography He was born in Naples to an engraver and landscape painter, Giuseppe Ricciardelli. He trained under Nicola Bonito in Naples, but then moved to Rome to train under Jan Frans van Bloemen, (also known as Orizzonte), where he encountered the work of Gaspard Poussin and Claude Lorraine. Grossi cites his death circa 1760. He was active and popular in Naples in the court of Charles of Bourbon, employed at Portici and he provided them with several over-doors ('sopraporte') pictures for Naples' Palazzo Reale. Pompeo Batoni
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (25 January 1708 – 4 February 1787) was an Italian painter who displayed a solid technical knowledge in his portrait work and in his numerous Allegory, allegorical and mythological pictures. The high number of foreign visitors travelling throughout Italy and reaching Rome during their "Grand Tour" led the artist to specialize in portraits. Batoni won international fame largely thanks to his customers, mostly British and Irish gentlemen, whom he portrayed, often with famous Italian landscapes in the background. Such Grand Tour portraits by Batoni were in British private collections, thus ensuring the genre's popularity in Great Britain. One generation later, Sir Joshua Reynolds would take up this tradition and become the leading English portrait painter. Gaspard Dughet
Gaspard Dughet (15 June 1615 – 25 May 1675), also known as Gaspard Poussin, was a French painter born in Rome. Life Dughet was born in Rome, the son of a French pastry-cook and his Italian wife. He has always generally been considered as a French painter, although in fact he never visited France. Between around 1631 and 1635 he became a pupil of Nicolas Poussin, who had married his sister Anne five years earlier. Because of this connection he was widely known as "Gaspard Poussin." After leaving Poussin's studio his works developed a more fluid style and developed his pictures of storms which account for 30 out of his 400 known works. Claude Lorrain
Claude Lorrain (; born Claude Gellée , called ''le Lorrain'' in French; traditionally just Claude in English; c. 1600 – 23 November 1682) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era. He spent most of his life in Italy, and is one of the earliest significant artists, aside from his contemporaries in Dutch Golden Age painting, to concentrate on landscape painting. His landscapes often transitioned into the more prestigious genre of history paintings by addition of a few small figures, typically representing a scene from the Bible or classical mythology. By the end of the 1630s he was established as the leading landscapist in Italy, and enjoyed large fees for his work.
