Organ Symphony
An organ symphony is a piece for solo pipe organ in various Movement (music), movements. It is a Symphony, symphonic genre, not so much in musical form (in which it is more similar to the organ sonata or suite (music), suite), but in imitating orchestral tone color, texture, and symphonic process. Though the very first organ symphony was written by German composer Wilhelm Valentin Volckmar in 1867, the genre is mainly associated with French romanticism. César Franck wrote what is considered to be the first French organ symphony in his ''Grande Pièce Symphonique'' several years earlier, and the composers Charles-Marie Widor, who wrote ten organ symphonies, and his pupil Louis Vierne, who wrote six, continued to cultivate the genre. Modern composers such as Jean Guillou have written organ symphonies as well. The pipe organ is a musical instrument that produces sound by driving pressurised air (called ''wind'') through the organ pipes selected from a Musical keyboard, keyboard. Francis Poulenc
Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (; 7 January 189930 January 1963) was a French composer and pianist. His compositions include mélodie, songs, solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets, and orchestral concert music. Clarence Dickinson
Clarence Dickinson (May 7, 1873 in Lafayette, Indiana – August 2, 1969 in New York City) was an American composer and organist. Early life and studies Dickinson grew up in a religious family. His grandfather was minister Baxter Dickinson. His father, the Rev. William Cowper Dickinson, had grown up at Lane Seminary while Baxter Dickinson was codirector with Lyman Beecher; his father's childhood playmates were Lyman's children Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Beecher. He was sixth cousin to poet Emily Dickinson, who corresponded with his father and sister. When Dickinson was born, his father was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Lafayette. Pierre Cochereau
Pierre Eugène Charles Cochereau (9 July 1924 – 6 March 1984) was a French organist, improviser, composer, and pedagogue. Cochereau was titular organist of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris from 1955 to his death in 1984 and was responsible for a controversial renovation of the cathedral's organ in the 1960s. He was greatly renowned as an improviser and organist in his lifetime and still is today. After his death, the Conservatory of Nice was renamed in his honour. Alexandre Eugène Cellier
Alexandre Eugène Cellier (17 June 1883 in Molières-sur-Cèze – 4 March 1968 in Paris) was a French organist and composer. Cellier studied organ with Alexandre Guilmant until 1908. In 1908, he won the first prize for organ at the Conservatoire de Paris. Before that, he also studied with Henri Dallier and Charles-Marie Widor. He was the organist ''Titulaire'' of the Temple de l'Étoile in Paris from 1910 until his death in 1968. The organ he used was a 3-manual Cavaillé-Coll organ with 32 stops, which was extended by Mutin (Cavaillé-Coll) in 1914. In Louis Vierne's biography ''Mes Souvenirs'', he describes Alexandre Cellier as a "cultivated musician" with improvisation skills. He gave concerts abroad. Émile Bourdon
Joseph Antoine Émile Bourdon (; 14 February 1884 – 11 July 1974) was a 20th-century French organist and composer. Biography Bourdon was the son of Magdelaine Louise Villate de Peufeilhoux (of noble descent) and Victor-Louis-Gabriel Bourdon (a financier). Later, he became a pupil of Alexandre Guilmant in the Conservatoire de Paris, Bourdon was a condisciple and friend of Marcel Dupré. He was the organist of the great organ of the Saint Nicholas Cathedral of Monaco from 1922 to 1968, before canon Henri Carol succeeded him. In addition, he was professor of organ at the Académie de Musique Fondation Prince Rainier III until 1968. His wife Jeanne Barbezat passed away on 17 August 1974, and Bourdon himself died on 11 July of that year. Joseph-Ermend Bonnal
Joseph-Ermend Bonnal (1 July 1880 – 14 August 1944); also ''Ermend-Bonnal'', alias ''Guy Marylis'') was a French composer and organist. Ermend-Bonnal received initial musical instruction from his father, a violinist. He then studied piano at the Conservatoire de Paris under Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot, harmony under Antoine Taudou, composition under Gabriel Fauré and organ under Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne. He also assisted Charles-Marie Widor at Saint-Sulpice, Albert Périlhou at Saint-Séverin and Charles Tournemire at the Basilica of St. Clotilde. Edward Shippen Barnes (September 14, 1887 in Sea Bright, New Jersey – February 14, 1958, in Idyllwild, California) was an American organist. Augustin Barié
Augustin Charles Barié (15 November 1883 – 22 August 1915) was a French composer and organist. Biography Barié was born in Paris as the only son of architect Charles-Maximin Henri Barié and Victorine Eugénie Petit and was blind from birth; however, he had large hands which spanned an eleventh, allowing him to play the difficult organ works of composers such as César Franck with relative ease. Elfrida Andrée
Elfrida Andrée (19 February 1841 – 11 January 1929), was a Swedish organist, composer, and conductor. She was the sister of Swedish opera singer-soprano Fredrika Stenhammar. Life and career Andrée was born on 19 February 1841 in Visby to the doctor Andreas Andrée. She was the pupil of Ludvig Norman and Niels Wilhelm Gade. Her sister was the singer Fredrika Stenhammar. An activist in the Swedish women's movement, she was one of the first female organists to be officially appointed in Scandinavia. Kalevi Aho
Kalevi Ensio Aho (born 9 March 1949) is a Finnish composer. Early years Aho began his interest in music at the age of ten, when he discovered a mandolin in his home and began to teach himself how to play it. He soon was taken under the tutelage of Martti Loikkanen, the boy's 4th grade teacher and founder of a local youth mandolin ensemble in Forssa. After learning how to read sheet music, Aho immediately started composing. Aho progressed so fast on the instrument that Loikkanen suggested he study the violin as well, with Loikkanen giving him private lessons.
