One-platoon System
The one-platoon system, also known as "iron man football", is a platoon system, rule-driven substitution pattern in American football whereby the same players were expected to stay on the field for the entire game, playing both offense and defense as required. Players removed for a substitute were lost to their teams for the duration of the half (until 1932) or quarter (until 1941). Existing alternatively is the two-platoon system (or simply the "platoon system"), which makes use of separate offensive and defensive units. (In the contemporary game third platoons of special teams players for kicking situations are also used). Each system has been used at different times in American college football and in the National Football League. 1935 New Hampshire Wildcats Football Team
The 1935 New Hampshire Wildcats football team was an American football team that represented the University of New Hampshire as a member of the New England Conference during the 1935 college football season. In its 20th season under head coach Butch Cowell, William "Butch" Cowell, the team compiled a 2–5–1 record, being outscored by their opponents 55–120. The team scored 47 of their points in two shutout wins, and only eight total points in their other six games. All five losses came in away games; the team had two wins and a tie at home. The team played its home games in Durham, New Hampshire, at Memorial Field. 2024 Arena Football League Season
The 2024 Arena Football League season was the first and only season in the new version of the Arena Football League (AFL). The 2024 season began April 27 with six games. The league was overshadowed by numerous problems and controversies (Especially during the first few weeks of the season.) Among them include the closures of multiple franchises, numerous cancellations of games, and the abrupt departure of the Philadelphia Soul players and staff, and the lack of payments handed out to most teams, resulting in questions about the league's future. The original commissioner of the league, Lee Hutton, was ultimately removed from his post following week 3 and was replaced with Nashville Kats president Jeff Fisher as interim commissioner in a unanimous vote among the remaining team owners. The Arena Football League (AFL) was a professional arena football league founded in 2023 with their first, and only, season beginning in 2024. The recent AFL took its identity, history, some of the rulebook and some team names from, but is not directly connected to, the previous iteration of the Arena Football League founded by Jim Foster in 1986. On February 1, 2023, G6 Sports Group (a Delaware corporation operating as the American arm of Toronto, Ontario-based hedge fund ForceOne Capital), a new ownership group that had acquired the league's trademarks and social media accounts, announced the league's launch, as a revival of the previous Arena Football League that operated in two incarnations from 1987 to 2008 and 2010 to 2019. Specialist (arena Football)
In arena football, a specialist was a player, other than a quarterback or placekicker, who was exempt from the league's one-platoon system ("Iron Man"). Under the original Arena football system, six of the eight players on each team were required to play both offense and defense. One of the two offensive positions was required to be a quarterback or, in the event of a kick, a placekicker. The other was known as an ''offensive specialist'' (OS). Offensive specialists usually played wide receiver, either as a flanker or a slotback. The defense was allowed two ''defensive specialists'' (DS), who almost universally played in the secondary. Arena Football
Arena football is a variety of gridiron football designed to be played indoors. The game is played on a smaller field than American or Canadian football, designed to fit in the same surface area as a standard North American ice hockey rink, and features between six and eight players for each team playing at any given time depending on the league, resulting in a faster and higher-scoring game that can be played on the floors of indoor arenas. Robert Reese Neyland (; February 17, 1892 – March 28, 1962) was an American football player and coach and officer in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Brigadier general (United States), brigadier general. He served three stints as the head football coach at the University of Tennessee (UT) from 1926 to 1934, 1936 to 1940, and 1946 to 1952. 1959 NFL Season
The 1959 NFL season marked the 40th regular season of the National Football League. It was the 14th and final season overseen by commissioner Bert Bell, as he died of a heart attack on October 11. A twelve-game season was played, culminating in a league championship game between the Western Division winning Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants, winners of the Eastern Division. 1949 NFL Season
The 1949 NFL season was the 30th regular season of the National Football League. Prior to the season, Boston Yanks owner Ted Collins asked the league to fold his team due to financial woes and give him a new one in New York City. This new team would be called the New York Bulldogs. The franchise, which has never missed a season in some form, carried on the legacy of the final Ohio League member Dayton Triangles, and the players and assets of the Boston Yanks moved to New York but did not fold. As a result of the move, professional football would not return to Boston until the Boston Patriots of the 4th American Football League began play in 1960. As the regular season came to a close, a merger agreement between the NFL and the All-America Football Conference was announced on December 9.
