Loris Ohannes Chobanian (April 17, 1933 – May 14, 2023) was an American-Iraqi-Armenian composer of classical music, conductor, and guitar and lute teacher and performer. He served as Professor of Composition as well as Composer-in-Residence at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory. Life Born on April 17, 1933, in Mosul, Iraq, Chobanian was introduced to classical music at an early age. His father Ohannes Chobanian, an oil engineer and an amateur musician, was a performer on the piano, the flute and the violin. When he was five years old, the senior Chobanian wrote a one-man operetta, "O Loris," which the young Chobanian sang in Kirkuk, Iraq, with his father conducting the orchestra. In 1951, he graduated from Baghdad College, a High School administered by American Jesuits from Boston, Mass. Ohannés Gurekian (, ; August 24, 1902, in Constantinople – March 1, 1984, in Asolo) was an Armenian architect, engineer, and Alpinism, alpinist. Biography Early life and education Ohannés Gurekian, son of Léon Gurekian and Mariamik Azarian, was born August 24, 1902, in Constantinople. He emigrated with his parents to Italy in 1907, living briefly in Rome and then in Asolo. He studied at the Ca' Zenobio degli Armeni, Moorat-Raphael College in Venice. At his father's direction, Ohannés enrolled in the school of engineering at the University of Padova, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1924, and completed a specialization in Hydraulic Engineering in 1926 (though he never worked as a hydraulic engineer). Ohannes Kurkdjian (first name sometimes spelled Onnes, Armenian spelling Hovhannes, 1851–1903) was a photographer based in Yerevan, Tiflis, Singapore and then Surabaya during the Dutch East Indies era. His namesake business (located at Bultzingslowenplein) was the studio Kurkdjian Atelier and later O. Kurkdjian & Co. Ohannes Tchekidjian (; born January 23, 1929) is an Armenian composer and conductor and a recipient of both USSR State Prize and People's Artist of USSR. Biography Tchekidjian was born in Istanbul, Turkey and attended Pangaltı Mkhitaryan School, Mekhitaryan School there for seven years. From 1941 to 1947 he attended French College of Saint Michel and from 1944 to 1951 worked at both Istanbul Conservatory as faculty conductor and as a conductor of the Duryan Choir.
