Ntfsresize
ntfsresize is a free Unix utility that non-destructively resizes the NTFS filesystem used by Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11 typically on a hard-disk partition. All NTFS versions used by 32-bit and 64-bit Windows are supported. No defragmentation is required prior to resizing since version 1.11.2. ntfsresize is included in the ntfsprogs package, developed by the Linux-NTFS project. Defragmentation
In the maintenance of file systems, defragmentation is a process that reduces the degree of fragmentation. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device used to store files into the smallest number of contiguous regions (fragments, ''extents''). It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Defragmentation is advantageous and relevant to file systems on electromechanical disk drives (hard disk drives, floppy disk drives and optical disk media). The movement of the hard drive's read/write heads over different areas of the disk when accessing fragmented files is slower, compared to accessing the entire contents of a non-fragmented file sequentially without moving the read/write heads to seek other fragments. In computing, CHKDSK (short for "check disk") is a system software, system tool and command (computing), command in DOS and Microsoft Windows (and related operating systems), as well as Digital Research FlexOS, IBM/Toshiba 4690 Operating System, 4690 OS, IBM OS/2. Bad Sector
Bad Sector is an ambient/noise project formed in 1992 in Tuscany, Italy by Massimo Magrini. While working at the Computer Art Lab of ISTI in Pisa (one of the CNR institutes), he developed original gesture interfaces that he uses in live performances: 'Aerial Painting Hand' (a device that tracks the position of the musician's hands in gloves of two different colors), 'UV-Stick' (an ultraviolet-illuminated stick that the musician moves in front of the camera—a computer reads its position and angle and makes changes to music generation algorithms accordingly), and others. Ntfsprogs was a collection of free Unix utilities for managing the NTFS file system used by the Windows NT operating system (since version 3.1) on a hard disk partition. 'ntfsprogs' was the first stable method of writing to NTFS partitions in Linux. All NTFS versions were supported, as used by 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. ntfsprogs was a popular way of interacting with NTFS partitions and was included by most Linux distributions and on Live CDs. Disk partitioning or disk slicing is the creation of one or more regions on secondary storage, so that each region can be managed separately. These regions are called partitions. It is typically the first step of preparing a newly installed disk after a partitioning scheme is chosen for the new disk before any file system is created. The disk stores the information about the partitions' locations and sizes in an area known as the partition table that the operating system reads before any other part of the disk. Each partition then appears to the operating system as a distinct "logical" disk that uses part of the actual disk.
