Nickel Mine
A nickel mine is a mine that produces nickel. Some mines produce nickel primarily, while some mines produce nickel as a side-product of some other metal that has a higher concentration in the ore. Geology Nickel occurs in two general types of ores, sulfides and oxides. The most important sulfide ore is pentlandite (Ni9S8) although many other nickel sulfides are known. Furthermore, nickel is often a constituent of iron sulfides such as pyrrhotite. The principal (i.e. economically most important) nickel oxides are nickeliferous limonite ((Fe1−xNix)O(OH)·nH2O). Pentlandite supplies an estimated 65% of the world's nickel but nickel laterites constitute the largest reserves. Extraction Nickel content of its ores is often only a few percent by weight. Sulfide ores are subjected to comminution followed by froth flotation. Pentlandite and related minerals separate with sulfides of copper, cobalt, and iron. Two hydrometallurgical methods have been developed to extract nickel ...

Nickel Mine At Hamn, Senja, Troms, Norway, 2014 August
Nickel is a chemical element; it has Chemical symbol, symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and Ductility, ductile transition metal. Pure nickel is chemically reactive, but large pieces are slow to react with air under Standard temperature and pressure, standard conditions because a Passivation (chemistry), passivation layer of Nickel(II) oxide, nickel oxide forms on the surface that prevents further corrosion. Even so, pure native metal, native nickel is found in Earth's crust only in tiny amounts, usually in ultramafic rocks, and in the interiors of larger iron meteorite, nickel–iron meteorites that were not exposed to oxygen when outside Earth's atmosphere. Meteoric iron, Meteoric nickel is found in combination with iron, a reflection of the origin of those elements as major end products of supernova nucleosynthesis. An iron–nickel mixture is thought to compose Earth's outer core, Earth's outer a ...

Ravensthorpe, Western Australia
Ravensthorpe is a town 541 km south-east of Perth and 40 km inland from the south coast of Western Australia. It is the seat of government of the Shire of Ravensthorpe. At the , Ravensthorpe had a population of 2,085. In 1848, the area was surveyed by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe who named many of the geographical features nearby, including the nearby Ravensthorpe Range that the later town was named after. There was one of the Western Australian Government Railways isolated branch lines between Hopetoun, Western Australia, Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe. This line, the Hopetoun to Ravensthorpe railway line, opened in 1909. Alluvial gold was discovered at the Phillips River in 1892. At the goldfield a ''de facto'' town emerged, known as ''Phillips River''. The government completed construction of a copper and gold smelter about 2 km south east of the town in 1906, used to cast copper and gold ingots. History A temporary pastoral lease ("Free Run") was regis ...

Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine
The Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine is a nickel mine and hydrometallurgical processing plant located at Bandalup Hill, east of Ravensthorpe, Western Australia. Built by BHP Billiton, it was closed in January 2009, after less than a year of operation due to a collapse in the price of nickel. It was sold in December 2009 to First Quantum Minerals who reopened the mine in December 2011, after 18 months of modifications and re-commissioning. Following a period of low nickel prices, the operation was placed on care and maintenance in October 2017. Production recommenced in January 2020 with POSCO purchasing a 30% shareholding in May 2021. History Mining in Ravensthorpe considerably predates the current nickel mine, with gold discoveries dating back to 1898. The town experienced a down turn after World War I but mining for copper continued up until the 1970s. A railway line connected Ravensthorpe with the port of Hopetoun from 1901 to 1925, when the line was closed. BHP Billiton commen ...

Koniambo Mine
The Koniambo mine is a large open pit mine of the laterite variety in the north of New Caledonia in the North Province. It is closest to the small town of Voh, on the west coast of the island. Nickel is found in saprolite ore on the Koniambo Massif, and taken by conveyor to a new smelter on the coast. Koniambo has one of the largest nickel reserves in New Caledonia, with around 151 million tonnes of ore grading at 2.58% nickel, which was in 2014 reputed to be the highest-grade undeveloped property in the world. Each 62.5 million tonnes of ore contains 4 million tonnes of nickel metal. The final output of the mine is ferronickel, approximately 176,000t per annum of which is produced in shot form. The shot is packaged into two-tonne bags for onward shipment. The projected mine life from first exploitation is 25 years. A deep water private port was built for import and export purposes. History 20th century Koniambo was exploited prior to the Second World War by Société Le Ni ...
