Nemonapride
Nemonapride, also previously known as emonapride and sold under the brand name Emilace, is an atypical antipsychotic which is used in the treatment of schizophrenia. It is taken by mouth. Side effects of nemonapride include akathisia, dystonia, hypokinesia, tremor, hypersalivation, and hyperprolactinemia, among others. The drug acts as a dopamine D2, D3, and D4 receptor antagonist. To a lesser extent, it is also a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. Structurally, nemonapride is a benzamide derivative and is related to sulpiride and other benzamides. Nemonapride was introduced for medical use in either 1991 or 1997. It was developed and marketed by Yamanouchi Pharmaceuticals. The drug is approved only in Japan and China. D4 Receptor
The dopamine receptor D4 is a dopamine D2-like G protein-coupled receptor encoded by the gene on chromosome 11 at 11p15.5. The structure of DRD4 has been reported in complex with the antipsychotic drug nemonapride. As with other dopamine receptor subtypes, the D4 receptor is activated by the neurotransmitter dopamine. It is linked to many neurological and psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, ADHD, addictive behaviors, Parkinson's disease, and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. A weak association has been drawn between DRD4 and borderline personality disorder. It is also a target for drugs which treat schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Akathisia (IPA: /æ.kə.ˈθɪ.si.ə/) is a movement disorder characterized by a subjective feeling of inner restlessness accompanied by mental distress and/or an inability to sit still. Sulpiride
