Murder Of Yadira Arroyo
On March 16, 2017, New York City Fire Department emergency medical technician (EMT) Yadira Arroyo was murdered in the Bronx, New York (state), New York, United States. 25-year-old Jose Gonzalez ran over Arroyo with her own ambulance, killing her and injuring her partner. Gonzalez, a mentally ill Recidivism, recidivist, was arrested at the scene and charged with the attack. Gonzalez was found mentally unfit to stand trial on several occasions. However, he was eventually determined to be sane and underwent trial. He was found guilty of Arroyo's murder in March 2023 and sentenced to life imprisonment the following month. Daniel A. Nigro (born October 11, 1948) is the former New York City Fire Commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). He served this position from 2014 until his retirement in 2022. Nigro's appointment was announced on May 9, 2014, and he was sworn in on June 9. Nigro was the 33rd Fire Commissioner in the 150-year history of the New York City Fire Department. The New York City fire commissioner is the civilian administrator of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), and is appointed by the mayor of the City of New York. Prior to 1865, the New York City Fire Department was staffed by volunteers. On March 30, 1865 the New York State legislature passed a law organizing the Metropolitan Fire Department as a paid firefighting force that took control of all the powers and authority of the volunteer department, as well as all the assets such as the fire trucks, equipment, and buildings.
