Photomontage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting, gluing, rearranging and overlapping two or more photographs into a new image. Sometimes the resulting composite image is photographed so that the final image may appear as a seamless physical print. A similar method, although one that does not use film, is realized today through image-editing software. This latter technique is referred to by professionals as " compositing", and in casual usage is often called " photoshopping" (from the name of the popular software system). In French, the word "montage" applied to cinema simply denotes editing. In Soviet montage theory, as originally introduced outside the USSR by Sergei Eisenstein, it was used to create symbolism. Later, the term "montage sequence", used primarily by British and American studios, became the common technique to suggest the passage of time. In music, montage (literally "putting together") or sound collage ("gluing together") is a technique where newly branded sound objects or compositions, including songs, are created from collage, also known as montage. This is often done through the use of sampling, while some playable sound collages were produced by gluing together sectors of different vinyl records. In any case, it may be achieved through the use of previous sound recordings or musical scores. Montage is a software toolkit used in astrophotography to assemble astronomical images in Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format into composite images, called mosaics, that preserve the calibration and positional fidelity of the original input images. It won a NASA Space Act Award in 2006. Montage was developed to support scientific research. It enables astronomers to create images of regions of the sky that are too large to be produced by astronomical cameras.
