Minister For North Wales
The Cabinet Secretary for North Wales ( cy, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Ogledd Cymru); or cy, Gweinidog y Gogledd, links=no, label=none; ) is a member of the cabinet in the Welsh Government. The current officeholder is Ken Skates since March 2024. The establishment of a role focusing on North Wales was first raised in 2009, but was established by Mark Drakeford in 2018. It was established over concerns of how devolution was centred on South Wales. A Plaid Cymru MS disputed the role's existence, while some argue for a directly elected mayor instead. Ken Skates
Kenneth Christian Skates MS (born 2 April 1976) is a Welsh Labour politician. Skates has represented the constituency of Clwyd South in the Senedd since the election of 2011. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, and worked as a journalist prior to becoming a politician. In September 2014 he became the deputy minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport. From May 2016 to December 2018 he was the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, and was the Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales until he stood down on 13 May 2021. The Minister for the Economy ( cy, Gweinidog dros yr Economi) is a member of the Cabinet in the Welsh Government. The current officeholder is Vaughan Gething MS. The position was titled ''Minister for the Economy and Transport'' from 2007 to 2011. The Minister had responsibility for the Department for the Economy and Transport, which combined two devolved functions of the Welsh Government: Business and Economy, and Transport. The department was created in June 2007, as successor to the Department for Enterprise Innovation and Networks, following the National Assembly for Wales elections in May 2007. 2009 Welsh Labour Leadership Election
The 2009 Welsh Labour leadership election was held following the resignation of Rhodri Morgan, who stepped down after nine years as First Minister of Wales. Morgan had made clear his intent to resign in 2009 as far back as 2005. As Morgan had been elected unopposed in 2000, this was the first contested election for the Welsh Labour leadership for more than a decade. The contest concluded on 1 December 2009 and was won on the first round by Carwyn Jones who won in all three sections of the ballot. As Welsh Labour was the senior partner in a Labour/Plaid Cymru coalition government, Jones was confirmed as First Minister the following week assumed office as First Minister on 10 December 2009. The Gething government was the Welsh Labour, Labour-led government of Wales formed on 21 March 2024 following the appointment of Vaughan Gething as First Minister of Wales, First Minister on 20 March 2024. History Following the resignation of Mark Drakeford, Gething was elected Leader of the Labour party on 16 March 2024 and appointed First Minister on 20 March.
