Minimalist cinema is related to the art and philosophy of minimalism. Background In film, minimalism usually is associated with filmmakers such as Robert Bresson, Chantal Akerman, Carl Theodor Dreyer, and Yasujirō Ozu. Minimalism
In visual arts, music, and other media, minimalism is an art movement that began in the post-war era in western art. The movement is often interpreted as a reaction to abstract expressionism and modernism; it anticipated contemporary post-minimal art practices, which extend or reflect on minimalism's original objectives. Larry Gottheim (born 1936) is an American avant-garde filmmaker. Early life Gottheim was born December 3, 1936. He attended a high school for music and the arts. Gottheim went to Oberlin College for undergraduate studies, where he became interested in poetry and fiction. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative literature at Yale University. Morgan Hall Fisher (born 1942, in Washington, D.C.) is an American experimental filmmaker and artist best known for his structuralist and minimalist films referencing the material processes of celluloid film and the means and methods of producing moving images, including the camera, the director and crew, and the editing process. Since the 1990s, Fisher has also been producing paintings and installation works. His work has been included in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions, 1985, 2004 and 2014. Paul Driessen (animator)
Paul Augustin Driessen (born 30 March 1940) is a Dutch film director, animator and writer. Biography After studying graphic design and illustration at the Art Academy in Utrecht, Driessen began animating TV commercials in the Netherlands in the 1960s, although he had no training in that art at all. When George Dunning, in search for talent, found Driessen at the Cine Cartoon Centre in Hilversum, he hired him as an animator for his feature animation film '' Yellow Submarine'' (1968). He also helped Driessen to emigrate to Canada where he became a member of the National Film Board of Canada in 1972.
