Metropolitan Regions In Germany
There are eleven metropolitan regions in Germany consisting of the country's most densely populated cities and their catchment areas. They represent Germany's political, commercial and cultural centres. The eleven metropolitan regions in Germany were organised into political units for planning purposes. Based on a narrower definition of metropolises commonly used to determine the metropolitan status of a given city, only four cities in Germany surpass the threshold of at least one million inhabitants within their administrative borders: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne. For urban centres outside metropolitan areas that are a similar focal point for their region, but on a smaller scale, the concept of the Regiopolis and the related concepts of ''regiopolitan area'' or ''regio'' were introduced by urban and regional planning professors in 2006. Northwest Metropolitan Region
The European Northwest Metropolitan Region (), formerly Metropolitan Region of Bremen/Oldenburg () is one of the eleven metropolitan regions in Germany. It covers the area of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen with its cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven and parts of the state of Lower Saxony. As of 2022, the region had almost 2.8 million residents. The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region () is the Metropolitan regions in Germany, largest metropolitan region in Germany, with over ten million inhabitants. GaWC
The Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) is a British think tank that studies the relationships between world cities in the context of globalization. It is based in the geography department of Loughborough University in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. GaWC was founded by Peter J. Taylor in 1998. Together with Jon Beaverstock and Richard G. Smith, they create the GaWC's biennial categorization of world cities into "Alpha", "Beta" and "Gamma" tiers. The three tiers are further divided into subgroupings using plus and minus signs. Düsseldorf is the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state of Germany. Berlin Metropolitan Region
The Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region () or capital region () is one of eleven metropolitan regions of Germany, consisting of the entire territories of the state of Berlin and the surrounding state of Brandenburg. The region covers an area of with a total population of about 6.2 million. The metropolitan region should be distinguished from Berlin's immediate agglomeration, dubbed ''Berliner Umland'' () which comprises the city and the nearby Brandenburg municipalities. Stuttgart Metropolitan Region
The Stuttgart Metropolitan Region is a metropolitan region in south-west Germany consisting of the cities and regions around Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Tübingen/Reutlingen. These cities are arranged into three agglomeration areas. The population of the area is about 5,300,000 and it is one of the biggest regions in Germany. This area covers an area of ca 15,000 km2. The Stuttgart metropolitan region is roughly 200 km south of Frankfurt, 200 km west of Munich and about 600 km east of Paris. Cologne Bonn Region
The Cologne Bonn Region (German: ''Region Köln/Bonn'') is a metropolitan area in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany, covering the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Leverkusen, as well as the districts of Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, Oberbergischer Kreis, Rhein-Erft-Kreis and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis. The region covers an area of 3,839 km2 with 3.13 million inhabitants (population density 815/km2). The city centres of Cologne and Bonn are 24 kilometres apart as the crow flies.
