In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a Municipal corporation, municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. George King Chisholm
George King Chisholm (September 4, 1814 – April 14, 1874) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He was born in Nelson Township in Upper Canada in 1814, the son of William Chisholm. He studied at Upper Canada College and moved to Hamilton, later settling in Oakville. He served in the Gore militia during the Upper Canada Rebellion and the Fenian raids. Chisholm served as reeve of Trafalgar Township from 1830 to 1852. In 1841, he was appointed sergeant-at-arms for the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. William Francis Romain (politician)
William Francis Romain (July 15, 1818 – after 1869) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He was a grain merchant and served as reeve of Trafalgar Township as well as serving on the town council and as mayor of Oakville, Ontario. Romain was born in Quebec City to parents Pere and Elizabeth Romain and was one of eight children in the family. He became the first postmaster of Brampton where he was also a grain dealer. He then moved to Oakville, and in 1847 married Esther Ann Chisolm, the daughter of William Chisholm. Romain purchased land from George King Chisholm for development but kept some lakefront property for his own home which he lost in 1869 due to bankruptcy. His home eventually became the Lakehurst Sanitarium in 1895. Romain served for two years as the reeve of Trafalgar Township, and then served on the Oakville town council. Robert Kerr Chisholm
Robert Kerr Chisholm (May 26, 1819 – February 27, 1899) was a political figure in Oakville, Ontario, serving as mayor in 1866. He was born in Nelson Township in Upper Canada in 1819, the son of William Chisholm, and was educated in Hamilton. Chisholm served as reeve of Trafalgar Township in 1854 and 1856 and served on the Oakville town council from 1857 to 1871 and 1879 to 1880. He also served as customs collector and postmaster in Oakville after his father's death in 1842; until that time, he had assisted his father with both of these functions. He died in Oakville in 1899. William McCraney
William McCraney (15 December 1831 – 21 June 1911) was a businessman and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Halton in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1875 to 1878 and from 1882 to 1887. Biography He was born in Trafalgar Township, Upper Canada in 1831, the son of Hiram McCraney and Louisa English. From 1852 to 1855, he was involved in lumbering and mining in California. He owned several large farms near Oakville and several sawmills in Halton County. McCraney helped build several Methodist churches and supported temperance. In 1857, he married Elizabeth Coote. In 1868, he sold his farm land and settled in Oakville. He served on the town council, serving as mayor in 1871 and 1872, and also served on the county council. McCraney was also president of the county agricultural society. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Halton in a by-election in 1875. John Urquhart (Canadian Politician)
John Urquhart Jr. (1844 – December 17, 1933) was a Canadian politician, druggist, and physician. He was the mayor of Oakville, Ontario, Canada from 1888 to 1891. Early life Urquhart was born in Oakville, Canada West. His father was John Urquhart, a Scottish immigrant to Canada, by way of New York, who was a surgeon and apothecary. The family lived in a combined house a business called Medical Hall in Oakville, Canada West. This building still stands as 182 Lakeshore Road East. At age sixteen, Urquhart ran away from home and worked as a sailor aboard Great Lakes ships. He subsequently worked as a farmer. Next, he studied at the Rolph School of Medicine in Toronto, the University of Trinity College, and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Hedley Shaw
Hedley Shaw (July 29, 1866 – November 29, 1921) was a miller and politician in Ontario. He served as mayor of Oakville in 1900. Biography He was born in Glanford township, the son of Thomas Shaw, a farmer. Shaw was educated in the County of Brant and apprenticed as a miller in Brantford. He established himself in business and operated in Brantford until 1893, when he purchased mills at Oakville, partnering in business with Thomas Foulds. In 1898, he bought out his partner and became president of the Hedley Shaw Milling Company. Shaw purchased mills at St. Catharines, Thorold and Port Colborne. In 1910, the Maple Leaf Milling Company, later part of Maple Leaf Foods, was formed and Shaw became vice-president and managing director. Shaw was also president of the Hedley Shaw Milling Company of Medicine Hat, vice-president of the St. Mary's Cement Company and president of the Port Colborne & St. Lawrence Navigation Company. George Hillmer
George Hillmer (1866 – 1935) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Halton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1923 to 1929 as a Conservative member. He was born on December 5, 1866, in Oakville, Canada West the son of Edward Hillmer and Jean Titherington. Hillmer originally operated a delivery service and livery stable but later became the proprietor of a Ford agency. In 1894, he married Pauline Bradbury. Hillmer was a member of the town council for Oakville, serving as mayor from 1910 to 1912 and serving eight years as reeve. He defeated Ernest Charles Drury to win a seat in the provincial assembly in 1923. Ann Mulvale
Ann Mulvale (born 1949) is a Canadian politician. She served as mayor of Oakville, Ontario for 18 years, from 1988 to 2006. Mayor of Oakville Mulvale was first elected mayor in 1988, defeating incumbent Bill Perras, after unsuccessfully running against him in 1985. Mulvale was acclaimed mayor in 1991 and re-elected three more times - in 1994, 1997 and 2003. In 2006 she was defeated by Rob Burton. Mulvale was a candidate for mayor in the 2010 Oakville municipal election. She lost to Rob Burton by 4838 votes. Rob Burton
Rob Burton (born 1946) is a Canadian businessman, journalist and politician. He currently serves as the 45th mayor of Oakville. He was elected in the municipal election of 2006, having failed to unseat Ann Mulvale in 2003. He was re-elected to office in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 municipal elections. In a 2014 endorsement of his re-election campaign, the Toronto Star editorial board called Burton "among the best mayors in the Greater Toronto Area."
