Eschen (; High Alemannic German, High Alemannic: ''Escha'') is a Municipalities of Liechtenstein, municipality in the north of Liechtenstein. It covers an area of , and is one of the five communes in the Unterland (electoral district), Unterland electoral district. As of 2024, it has a population of 4,629 inhabitants. Etymology The name is considered to be of Celtic language, Celtic origin, derived from "esca" meaning "by the waterside". History Archeological evidence points to some pre-historic settlements in the region. Eschen was established as "Essane" during the Rätic reign in 842 CE. The name of the village Nendeln appears in written text from the 14th century CE. It is given by different names such as Nendla, Endlen, and Anndlen. Josef Hoop
Franz Josef Hoop (; 14 December 1895 – 19 October 1959) was a diplomat and politician from Liechtenstein who served as Prime Minister of Liechtenstein from 1928 to 1945. He later served as the President of the Landtag of Liechtenstein from 1958 until his death in 1959. Hoop initially worked as the attaché and chargé d'affaires at the Liechtenstein legation in Vienna and then in the Swiss customs administration before being elected as prime minister following the 1928 general election. In his first years in office he oversaw Liechtenstein's response to the Great Depression through economic programs. USV Eschen/Mauren is a Liechtensteiner football club from Eschen and Mauren. They play at the Sportpark Eschen-Mauren, which used to be the national football stadium, until the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz was built. USV Eschen/Mauren, like all other Liechtensteiner teams, play in the Swiss Football League system. The first team plays in 1. Liga, Group 3, the fourth tier of the Swiss Football League, following promotion in the 2007/08 season from 2.Liga interregional as a result of winning the Group 5 division. Egon Marxer
Egon Marxer (7 February 1920 – 17 March 1999) was a politician from Liechtenstein who served as the mayor of Eschen from 1972 to 1987. He was previously a volunteer member of the Waffen-SS during World War II. Life Marxer was born on 7 February 1920 as the son of Rudolf Marxer and Theresia Wohlwend as one of three children. In May 1938, he joined the German National Movement in Liechtenstein as a member of its youth movement, and he participated in the 1939 Liechtenstein putsch as a chauffeur. During World War II, he volunteered as a member of the Waffen-SS and was deployed to the Eastern Front (World War II), Eastern Front. In 1946, Marxer was convicted of high treason against Liechtenstein, and was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Johann Georg Hasler (7 January 1895 – 16 May 1976) was a politician from Liechtenstein who served in the Landtag of Liechtenstein from 1949 to 1953, and again from 1957 to 1958. He also served as a government councillor from 1941 to 1945 and as the mayor of Eschen from 1951 to 1963. Ludwig Marxer (veterinarian)
Ludwig Marxer (19 January 1855 – 26 October 1946) was a veterinarian who served in the Landtag of Liechtenstein from 1886 to 1902. He also served as the mayor of Eschen from 1888 to 1898. Life Marxer was born on 19 January 1855 in Eschen to one of ten children. His parents were trained veterinarians and he studied the field in Munich from 1870 to 1873. He worked as a veterinarian in his home town of Eschen from 1877. He was appointed to serve in the Landtag of Liechtenstein by Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein, Johann II in 1886, a position in which he held until 1902.
