Distillers grains are a cereal byproduct of the distillation process. Brewer's spent grain usually refers to barley produced as a byproduct of brewing, while distillers grains are a mix of wheat, maize, rice and other grains. There are two main sources of these grains. Soybean meal is used in food and animal feeds, principally as a protein supplement, but also as a source of metabolizable energy. Total mixed ration (TMR) is a method of feeding beef and dairy cattle. A TMR diet achieves a wide distribution of nutrients in uniform feed rather than switching between several types. A cow's ration should include good quality forages, a balance of grains and proteins, vitamins and minerals.
