This list of majority-Black counties in the United States covers the counties and county-equivalents in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territory of United States Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the population in each county that is Black or African American. The data source for the list is the 2020 United States Census. At the time of the 2020 Census, there were 47.5 million Americans who were Black (either alone or in combination), making up 14.2% of the U.S. population. State by state, the highest number of Black Americans could be found in Texas (3.96 million), Florida (3.70 million), Georgia (3.54 million), New York state (3.53 million), and California (2.83 million). Meanwhile, the highest proportions of African Americans were in the District of Columbia (44.17%), Mississippi (37.94%), Louisiana (33.13%), Georgia (33.03%), and Maryland (32.01%). Greene County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,730, the least populous county in Alabama. Its county seat is Eutaw. It was named in honor of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene of Rhode Island. Holmes County, Mississippi
Holmes County is a county in the U.S. state of Mississippi; its western border is formed by the Yazoo River and the eastern border by the Big Black River. The western part of the county is within the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,000. Its county seat is Lexington. Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi; its western border is formed by the Mississippi River. Claiborne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,135. Its county seat is Port Gibson. The county is named after William Claiborne, the second governor of the Mississippi Territory. Claiborne County is included in the Vicksburg metropolitan area as well as the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Since 1870, the parish has been coextensive with the city of New Orleans, and the parish and city are largely governed as a single consolidated city.
