Madal
The madal () or maadal is a Nepalese folk musical instrument. The madal is used mainly for rhythm-keeping in Nepalese folk music. It is very popular and widely used as a hand drum in Nepal. The madal has a cylindrical body with a slight bulge at its center and heads at both ends, one head larger than the other. It is usually played horizontally in a seated position, with both heads played simultaneously. The madal is the national instrument of Nepal and is the backbone of most Nepali folk music. The well-known Nepali musician Ranjit Gazmer introduced this instrument to Bollywood music when he started working under Rahul Dev Burman, and has used it in numerous Bollywood songs such as '' Hum Dono Do Premi'' and '' Kanchi Re Kanchi Re''. Kaajee Singh
Kaajee Singh (1945 – 21 January 2025) was an Indian Gorkha percussionist. In 2022, he was awarded Padma Shri by the Indian government for his contribution in music in Madal. Background Singh was from Kalimpong. Singh, hailing from Darjeeling in north Bengal, has been a part of a family immersed in music for three generations. Growing up in Kalimpong hills, he developed a fascination for folk culture and music from a young age, inspired by his parents. Born in 1945, he has been a lifelong contributor to the field. Kaajee was the only child of the renowned "Maadalaacharya", the late Indrajeet Singh Sardaar and Mohanphul Singh. His dad, Indrajeet Singh Sardar, was a leader in the Shree Maadal sect of the Gorkha people. Mardala
Mardala (, ) is a classical percussive instrument native to the east Indian state of Odisha, traditionally used as the primary accompaniment in Odissi classical music. The instrument is slightly different from other instruments (like Madal, Mridangam, etc.) that might have similar names in the Indian subcontinent due to its unique construction, acoustic features and traditional playing technique. Rahul Dev Burman
Rahul Dev Burman (; 27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994) was an Indian music director and singer, who is considered to be one of the greatest and most successful music directors of the Hindi film music industry. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Burman composed musical scores for 331 films, bringing a new level of music ensemble with his compositions. Burman did his major work with legendary singers Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. He also worked extensively with lyricist Gulzar, with whom he has some of the most memorable numbers in his career. Drum
The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments. In the Hornbostel–Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone. Ranjit Gazmer
Ranjit Gazmer, also credited as Ranjit Gajmer, is an Indian Gorkha musician and music director known for his contribution to the music industry of Nepali cinema. He had a long association with Indian music director R.D. Burman. He has composed for most of the films directed by Tulsi Ghimire, a renowned film director in Nepal. Early life Ranjit Gazmer is from a gold merchant family of Darjeeling, West Bengal. Gazmer was a student of Amber Gurung at his Art Academy of Music in Darjeeling. His contemporaries were Gopal Yonzon, Karma Yonzon, Sharan Pradhan, Aruna Lama and Jitendra Bardewa, all of whom went on to be musicians. He was a part of a musical group called 'Sangam Club' and was also a drummer for 'The Hillians', the first-ever western band formed in Darjeeling. Resonance
