Steve Goodman, known as Kode9 (born 1973) is a Scottish electronic music artist, DJ, and founder of the Hyperdub record label. He was one of the founding members of the early dubstep scene with his late collaborator The Spaceape. He has released four full-length albums: 2006's '' Memories of the Future'' and 2011's '' Black Sun'' (both with The Spaceape), ''Nothing'' (2015), ''Escapology'' and ''Astro-Darien'' (2022). As owner of Hyperdub, Goodman has signed artists such as Burial, DJ Rashad, Zomby, and Fatima Al Qadiri. Goodman has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Warwick and has published a book, ''Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear'', in 2009. Black Sun (Kode9 & The Spaceape Album)
''Black Sun'' is the second and final collaborative studio album by Kode9 & the Spaceape. It was released on 18 April 2011 through Kode9's record label Hyperdub. It received generally favorable reviews from critics. Background ''Black Sun'' is Kode9 & the Spaceape's first studio album since ''Memories of the Future'' (2006). It includes contributions from Cha Cha and Flying Lotus. The album's cover art is designed by Optigram. Critical reception Alex Macpherson of ''The Guardian'' stated, "while 2006's ''Memories of the Future'' captured the nocturnal smokiness of traditional dubstep, ''Black Sun'' is more about richly textured, pitch-shifting synths and spidery rhythmic workouts." Burial (musician)
William Emmanuel Bevan, known by his recording alias Burial, is a British electronic musician from South London. Initially remaining anonymous, Burial became the first artist signed to Kode9's electronic label Hyperdub in 2005. He won acclaim the following year for his Burial (Burial album), self-titled debut album, an influential release in the UK's dubstep scene which showcased a dark, emotive take on UK rave music styles such as UK garage and 2-step garage, 2-step; it was named the album of the year by ''The Wire (magazine), The Wire''. Burial's second album, ''Untrue (album), Untrue'', was released to further critical acclaim in 2007, earning recognition as a landmark work of electronic music. ''Memories of the Future'' is the first collaborative studio album by electronic musicians kode9 and Spaceape. A review in ''Tiny Mix Tapes'' described it as "an important release in dubstep's development." A circumspect review in ''Resident Advisor'' noted the "intensity" of the album's "atmosphere", but argued that its quality was somewhat uneven. The Spaceape
Stephen Samuel Gordon (17 June 1970Melissa Bradshaw"The Spaceape obituary" ''The Guardian'', 24 October 2014. – 2 October 2014), known as The Spaceape, was a British poet and MC. He is known for his work on the electronic music label Hyperdub, and in particular for his frequent collaborations with labelmate Kode9. He was described by ''The Guardian'' as "a pioneering Hyperdub artist," while Pitchfork Media stated that "if first-wave UK dubstep had a voice, it belonged to Stephen Gordon." Gordon died on 2 October 2014 at the age of 44, following a battle with a rare form of cancer. IMO Records
IMO Records is an online retailer of vinyl and electronic dubstep, drum and bass, and hardcore dance music. The firm also sells clothing, DJ equipment and ancillary products. IMO Records was established in 1998 as a mail order business and record shop, now closed, by Jason Robertson, who was better known as DJ Spinback. Robertson was a hardcore disk jockey and music producer from Surrey who was closely associated with the London pirate radio station Dream FM (1994 to 1997/98) which was successful that it was able to host its own rave parties. Robertson also DJ'd on Kiss FM. Today, IMO Records is based in Wimbledon, South London, and is a trading name of Robertson of London Limited, a company incorporated on 20 June 2000. A rave (from the verb: '' to rave'') is a dance party at a warehouse, club, or other public or private venue, typically featuring performances by DJs playing electronic dance music. The style is most associated with the early 1990s dance music scene when DJs played at illegal events in musical styles dominated by electronic dance music from a wide range of sub-genres, including drum and bass, dubstep, trap, break, happy hardcore, trance, techno, hardcore, house, and alternative dance.
