Kitchen Sink Drama
Kitchen sink realism (or kitchen sink drama) is a British cultural movement that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in theatre, art, novels, film and television plays, whose protagonists usually could be described as " angry young men" who were disillusioned with modern society. It used a style of social realism which depicted the domestic situations of working-class Britons, living in cramped rented accommodation and spending their off-hours drinking in grimy pubs, to explore controversial social and political issues ranging from abortion to homelessness. The harsh, realistic style contrasted sharply with the escapism of the previous generation's so-called " well-made plays". The films, plays and novels employing this style are often set in poorer industrial areas in the North of England, and use the accents and slang heard in those regions. David Sylvester
Anthony David Bernard Sylvester (21 September 1924 – 19 June 2001) was a British art critic and curator. Although he received no formal education in the arts, during his long career he was influential in promoting modern artists, in particular Francis Bacon, Joan Miró, and Lucian Freud. Life and career Born in London, his father was a Russian-Jewish antiques dealer. Sylvester had trouble as a student at University College School and was thrown out of the family home. He wrote for the paper ''Tribune'' and went to Paris in 1947 where he met Alberto Giacometti, one of the strongest influences on him. Sylvester is credited with coining the term '' kitchen sink'' originally to describe a strand of post-war British painting typified by John Bratby. Jack Smith (artist)
Jack Smith (18 June 1928 – 11 June 2011) was a British realist and, later, abstract artist. Life Jack Smith was born in 1928 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Edward Middleditch
Edward Middleditch (1923–1987) was an English artist. He was born in Chelmsford, Essex. In the 1930s his family moved to Nottingham, where he attended the Mundella Grammar School from 1934 to 1939. He then served in the British Army during the Second World War, serving overseas in France, Germany, Burma and West Africa, and being awarded the Military Cross (MC) in 1945. From 1949 to 1952 he attended the Royal College of Art, where his teachers were Ruskin Spear, Carel Weight and John Minton. His fellow students included Derrick Greaves and Jack Smith. Middleditch associated early on with the so-called 'Kitchen Sink' school of realist painters in the 1950s. John Bratby
John Randall Bratby RA (19 July 1928 – 20 July 1992) was an English painter who founded the kitchen sink realism style of art that was influential in the late 1950s. He made portraits of his family and celebrities. His works were seen in television and film. Bratby was also a writer. Early life and education John Bratby was born on 19 July 1928 in Wimbledon, south-west London. Between 1949 and 1950, he studied art at Kingston College of Art. He then began attending the Royal College of Art, completing his studies in 1954.
