Judo At The 2004 Summer Olympics
Judo at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall and featured 368 judoka competing for 14 gold medals with seven different weight categories in both the men's and women's competitions. Japan dominated the event by taking 8 gold and 2 silver medals. Gold and silver medals in each weight class were determined by a single-elimination bracket. There was a repechage for those who are eliminated by one of the eventual semifinalists. Since there are four semifinalists, this means that four of the losers of the round of 32 (i.e., 25%) faced four of the losers from the round of 16 (50%). The winners of these matches faced the four judokas who have lost in the quarterfinals. The winners, then, of these four matches faced each other to narrow the repechage field down to two judokas. SUNEL Arena (stylised as SUNEL arena), also known as the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall (), is a multi-purpose Arena, indoor arena located in Ano Liosia, in the western section of Athens, Athens, Greece. Hiroshi Izumi (; born June 22, 1982, in Shimokita District Aomori) is a Japanese judoka and mixed martial artist. He has fought in World Victory Road and had a one-fight stint in the Dream promotion for the Dream Light Heavyweight Championship. Izumi also appeared in both Dynamite!! 2009 and Dynamite!! 2010 New Year's Eve events. Background Izumi was born in Aomori, Japan, and comes from a fishing family in the Shimokita Peninsula. James A. Pedro (born October 30, 1970) is an American retired World Champion and Olympic judoka, as well as a current judo coach. Pedro currently holds a 7th degree black belt in judo. He is the coach of Kayla Harrison, the first and currently only American to win an Olympic gold medal in judo. Early life and education Pedro was born on October 30, 1970, in Danvers, Massachusetts.
