Judex
Judex (real name Jacques de Trémeuse) is a fictional French vigilante hero created by Louis Feuillade and Arthur Bernède for the 1916 silent film '' Judex''. Judex (whose name is Latin for "judge") is a mysterious avenger who dresses in black and wears a slouch hat and cloak. He was possibly conceived as a heroic version of the criminal character Fantômas. (Feuillade had directed the popular 1913 serial ''Fantômas''.) The character has since appeared in other films, in novels, on stage and in comic books. ''Judex'' is a 1963 French-language crime film remake of the 1916 French film serial of the same name concerning the adventures of pulp hero Judex. Directed by French filmmaker Georges Franju, the film stars Channing Pollock as Judex/Vallieres, Édith Scob as Jacqueline and Francine Bergé as Diana. Plot Banker Favraux has attained vast wealth through swindles and blackmail. In his mansion, Favraux receives a threatening note signed only "Judex", that demands he return swindled money to the victims. ''Judex'' is a 1916 silent film, silent France, French film Serial (film), serial concerning the adventures of Judex, who is a pulp hero predating The Shadow, created by Louis Feuillade and Arthur Bernède. Plot The story is complex and is told in 12 chapters. The basic plot involves a corrupt banker named Favraux, who is the target of Judex's revenge. It is eventually revealed that Judex's real identity is Jacques de Trémeuse, a man trying to avenge his family ruined by Favraux. Complicating matters is Favraux's beautiful and innocent daughter Jacqueline, with whom the avenger has fallen in love. René Cresté
René Auguste Cresté (5 December 1881 – 30 November 1922) was a French stage and film actor and director of the silent film era. Cresté is possibly best recalled as Judex, the title character in the Louis Feuillade-directed crime-adventure serial ''Judex'', which ran in twelve installments in theaters from 1917 until 1918. Early life and career René Auguste Cresté was born in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. Jeanne Roques (23 February 1889 – 11 December 1957), known professionally as Musidora, was a French actress, film director, and writer. She is best known for her acting in silent films, and rose to public attention for roles in the Louis Feuillade serials ''Les Vampires'' as Irma Vep and in ''Judex'' as Marie Verdier. Édith Scob
Édith Scob (21 October 1937 – 26 June 2019) was a French film and theatre actress, best known for her role as the daughter with a disfigured face in '' Eyes Without a Face'' (1960). Early life and family Scob was born Édith Helena Vladimirovna Scobeltzine, the granddaughter of a Russian Army general and White Russian émigré. Her father was an architect and her mother a journalist. Her elder brother, Michel Scob (1935–1995), was a French cycling champion and Olympian. At age 14, she underwent treatment for anorexia. Her love of literature inspired an interest in theatre. Scob was studying French at the Sorbonne and taking drama classes when she was cast in her first role. She and her husband, composer Georges Aperghis, have two sons, Alexander (born 1970) and Jerome (born 1972), both writers. Scob died in Paris on June 26th, 2019. No cause of death was given. Yvette Andréyor (born Yvette Louise Pauline Royé, 6 August 1891 – 30 October 1962) was a French actress most popular in the era of silent film. She appeared in more than 100 films between 1910 and 1962. Biography Yvette Louise Pauline Royé was born at the maternity hospital of Port-Royal in the 14th arrondissement of Paris on 6 August 1891 to Jean-Baptiste André Royé, an artist, and Marie-Louise Carcel. At six, she made her debut on the stage of the Théâtre de l'Odéon. She continued her artistic training at the conservatory where she won an award in 1913. Afterwards, she began performing at the Antoine theater and in Belgium. Yvette Royé changed her name to Yvette Andréyor and made her film debut in 1910.
