Jaú
Jaú is a city and municipality in the center of the state of São Paulo (state), São Paulo, in Brazil. The population is 151,881 (2020 est.) in an area of . The elevation is . The city takes its name from the native fish species ''Gilded catfish, jau''. History The history of the city goes back to 1853, when a group of people decided to settle and found a village. Not until 1889, however, did it achieve the status of town. Its most widely known inhabitant is João Ribeiro de Barros, the first man to travel from Europe to South America by plane, in 1927, 23 days before Charles Lindbergh's flight. Jaú National Park
The Jaú National Park () is a national park located in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. It is one of the largest forest reserves in South America, and part of a World Heritage Site. Location The name "Jaú" comes from that of one of the largest fish in Brazil, the gilded catfish or jau (''Zungaro zungaro''), after which the main river of the park is named. The park is in the Amazon biome in the Japurá-Solimões-Negro moist forests ecoregion. It covers an area of . It was created by decree 85.200 of 24 September 1980. Before the introduction of the metric system, one may divide the history of Indian systems of measurement into three main periods: the pre-Akbar period, the period of the Akbar system, and the British colonial period. During the Indian pre ancient period, weights and measure systems varied from region to region, commodity to commodity, and rural to urban areas. The weights were based on the weight of various seeds (in particular the wheat berry and Ratti) and lengths were based on the length of arms and width of fingers. The gilded catfish, Jau catfish or dourado catfish, (''Zungaro zungaro'') is a South American catfish (order Siluriformes) of the family Pimelodidae. It is also known as manguruyu or black manguruyu. Taxonomy By some sources, it is the only species of the monotypic genus ''Zungaro''. However, some sources list other species as valid, such as ''Zungaro jahu''.
