Island Studies
Island studies, also known as Nissology, is an interdisciplinarity, interdisciplinary discipline (academia), academic field devoted to analyzing Islands. Island studies examines the relationship between islands and islanders. History International Small Island Studies Association hosted the first Island Studies Conference in 1986 at Vancouver Island. Small Islands Information Network became one of the first places for researchers of island studies to connect. Island researchers examine the relationship between Islands and geographic isolation and climate change. In the mid-1980s, Island Studies started developing as an independent academic field. In 1992, Island scholars met at the University of Prince Edward Island at the newly established Institute of Island Studies to discuss islands. Interdisciplinarity
Interdisciplinarity or interdisciplinary studies involves the combination of multiple academic disciplines into one activity (e.g., a research project). James "Jim" Randall
James Edward Randall was educated as a Canadian geographer and is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Prince Edward Island and scholar of Island Studies. He was the chair of the Institute of Island Studies. Randall was the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the Institute of Island Studies of the University of Prince Edward Island. Early life and education Randall has a BA and MA from York University. He completed his PhD from the University of Washington. Jeju National University
Jeju National University is one of ten Flagship Korean National Universities. Founded in 1952 in Jeju City, the provincial capital of Jeju Province, Jeju, South Korea. Philip Conkling
Philip Wheeler Conkling is the founder and former president of the Island Institute, a membership-based nonprofit organization located in Rockland, Maine that serves as a voice for the balanced future of the islands and waters of the Gulf of Maine, especially the 15 year-round island communities along the Maine coast. Conkling also serves as an alternate commissioner of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, and is on the Maine state board of the Conservation Law Foundation. He lives in the small coastal town of Camden, Maine. Early life and education Conkling completed his B.A. from Harvard University in 1970. Godfrey Baldacchino
Godfrey Baldacchino (born 25 April 1960) is a Maltese and Canadian social scientist. He was Pro Rector (International Development & Quality Assurance) (2016-2021) and Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta. Between 2016 and 2020, he was with Jim Randall, the UNESCO Co-Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada (a title held in partnership with the University of Malta). Baldacchino is former Director of the Centre for Labour Studies at the University of Malta and is chairman of its board. With Alexander Gatt, Baldacchino founded the Students Astronomical Circle (SAC) in 1978. Laurie Brinklow is a Canadian academic, poet, and author. She is an assistant professor of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island.
