''Insidious'' is a 2010 supernatural horror film directed and co-edited by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell, and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. It is the first installment in the ''Insidious'' franchise and the third in terms of the series' in-story chronology. The story centers on a married couple whose boy inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for a variety of demonic entities in an astral plane. ''Insidious'' had its world premiere on September 14, 2010, at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and received a wide theatrical release on April 1, 2011, by FilmDistrict. ''Insidious'' is an American horror franchise created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan that has been produced by Blumhouse in association with Sony’s Stage 6 Films since 2010. The films in the franchise include '' Insidious'' (2010), '' Chapter 2'' (2013), '' Chapter 3'' (2015), '' The Last Key'' (2018), and '' The Red Door'' (2023). The films have grossed over $731million worldwide on a combined budget of $42.5million. The first two films were directed by Wan, the third by Whannell (who also served as the screenwriter for all five films), Adam Robitel directed the fourth installment, and Patrick Wilson directed the fifth installment (the films marked the respective directorial debuts for Whannell and Wilson). ''Insidious'' is the soundtrack to the Insidious (film), 2010 horror film of the same name, which is the first film in the Insidious (film series), ''Insidious'' film series. The film's musical score is composed by Joseph Bishara, who would become Wan's recurrent collaborator, scoring for The Conjuring Universe, ''The Conjuring'' Universe and other films in the franchise. The score consists of 26 original tracks and was released by Void Recordings on October 11, 2011, six months after the film's wide theatrical release. Development Bishara talked with Wan about using atonal modern classical music for the soundtrack and sent various collections back and forth to help establish a tone. When he first read the script, he created some basic sketches on paper comprising musical ideas and notes. Mephisto Walz is an American gothic rock band formed in 1986 by Barry Galvin (known as Bari-Bari) and John Schuman (known as Johann) after their departure from the deathrock band Christian Death. History Christian Death Barry Galvin (Bari-Bari) joined Christian Death as the bassist when Rozz Williams was the lead vocalist. After Williams left the band in 1985, guitarist Valor Kand took over as lead singer and became the principal songwriter. Christian Death's 1985 album ''Atrocities'' and the EPs ''The Wind Kissed Pictures'' and ''Believers of the Unpure'' featured Bari-Bari, Johann (bass), and David Glass (drums). These musicians would later collaborate in various line-ups of Mephisto Walz. Some tracks on ''Atrocities'', such as "Tales of Innocence", "Strapping Me Down", and "Silent Thunder", were written by Bari-Bari.
