Inner-worldly asceticism was characterized by Max Weber in '' Economy and Society'' as the concentration of human behavior upon activities leading to salvation within the context of the everyday world. He saw it as a prime influence in the emergence of modernity and the technological world, a point developed in '' The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism''. John Edward Christopher Hill (6 February 1912 – 23 February 2003) was an English Marxist historian and academic, specialising in 17th-century English history. From 1965 to 1978 he was Master of Balliol College, Oxford. Early life Christopher Hill was born on 6 February 1912, Bishopthorpe Road, York, to Edward Harold Hill and Janet Augusta (''née'' Dickinson). In social science, disenchantment (german: Entzauberung) is the cultural rationalization and devaluation of religion apparent in modern society. The term was borrowed from Friedrich Schiller by Max Weber to describe the character of a modernized, bureaucratic, secularized Western society.
