Indian folk music is diverse because of India's enormous cultural and traditional diversity. It is sung in various languages and dialects throughout the length and breadth of this vast nation and exported to different parts of the world owing to migration. Chowtal
Chowtal or Chautal or Chawtal, aside from being the name of a " taal"/"tala" or meter in Hindustani classical music, is a form of folksong of North India's Bhojpuri region, sung during the Phagwa or Holi festival. In chowtal, two rows of singers face each other (semi-circle), with a "dholak" drummer at one end, and sing lines of Hindi text antiphonally. While the melodies are relatively simple, the song undergoes various modulations of rhythm and tempo, alternating between subdued passages and exciting climaxes. Chowtal is generally sung by enthusiasts for their own pleasure, rather than for an audience. Sudhir Phadke
Sudhir Phadke (; born Ram Phadke; 25 July 1919 – 29 July 2002) was an Indian singer-composer. He is regarded as an icon of the Marathi film industry and Marathi Sugam Sangeet with a legacy spanning five decades. Apart from Marathi, Phadke sang and composed songs in several Hindi films as well. Phadke's nickname was Babuji. Life Sudhir Phadke was born in Kolhapur on 25 July 1919. His birth name was Ram Phadke, but he later changed his name to 'Sudhir' when he composed a song for His Master's Voice. Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar
Gajānan Digambar Mādguḷkar (1 October 1919 – 14 December 1977) was a Marathi language, Marāthi poet, lyricist, writer and actor from India. He is popularly known in his home state of Maharashtra, Mahārāshtra by just his initials as Ga Di Mā. He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1951 and Padma Shri in 1969. He has written 157 screen plays and over 2000 songs in his career. He was called Ādhunik Valmiki (the modern Valmiki) of current era due to his composition of Geet Ramayan, Geet Rāmāyan (lit. Ramayana in Songs) as the most notable work. 2019 is celebrated as his Birth Century year. Government of Maharashtra hosts various events and festivals to grace the occasion. Jagdish Khebudkar
Jagdish Khebudkar (10 May 1932 – 3 May 2011) was a Marathi writer and lyricist of Marathi cinema, known for his songs in films like '' Pinjra'' (1972), ''Sadhi Mansa'', ''Samna'' (1975), ''Chandra Hota Sakshila'' and ''Ashtavinayak''. Starting in 1960, he remained associated with the Marathi film industry for the next 50 years, during which he established a repertoire of 2500 songs in 300 films. Govind Vinayak Karandikar (23 August 1918 – 14 March 2010), better known as Vindā, was an Indian poet, writer, literary critic, and translator in the Marathi-language. Early life Karandikar was born on 23 August 1918, in Dhalavali village in the Devgad taluka present-day Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Raju Ananthaswamy
Raju Ananthaswamy (1973–2009) was a music composer and director. He worked on Sugama Sangeetha for more than 15 years. He was the son of vocalist Mysore Ananthaswamy. He died in 2009, at the age of 35 years. Personal life Raju Ananthaswamy began playing music in his father's troupe at a young age. He had his initial Tabala lessons from Vid. Gunda Shastry of Hanumantanagar, Bengaluru. In addition to tabla, he could play a variety of other musical instruments including guitar, mandolin and keyboard. Archana Udupa is an Indian singer. She sings devotional, classical and film songs. She is graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Shimoga Subbanna or Shivamogga Subbanna (born as G. Subramanya, 14 December 1938 – 11 August 2022) was an Indian Sugama Sangeetha(Light Music) playback singer in the Kannada language. Mysore Ananthaswamy
Mysore Ananthaswamy was one of the pioneers of Kannada Bhavageethe in Karnataka. He was a very popular composer and singer of Kannada Sugama Sangeetha. He composed music for several poems and bhavageethe written by well-known Kannada poets like Kuvempu, K. S. Nissar Ahmed, N S Lakshminarayana Bhatta and others. Some of his songs includes 'Jogada Siri Belakinali', Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate, O Nanna Chetana, Tanuvu Ninnade Manavu Ninnade, Ede Tumbi Haadidenu etc....
