An independent union is a trade union that is independent of something. Historically it referred to a trade union which represents workers that is free of employer control. (This includes a union representing workers in more than one plant located in two or more states but employed by the same employer). Independent Workers' Union Of Great Britain
The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is a trade union in the United Kingdom. The IWGB is composed of eleven branches which organise workers within their chosen industry, run their own campaigns and have their own representative officials. The IWGB is one of the main trade unions in challenging employment law relating to the 'gig economy'. The IWGB organises workers particularly in precarious employment and un-unionised sectors. In addition, the IWGB also engages in grassroots activism not traditionally associated with trade unions. United Voices Of The World
United Voices of the World (UVW) is an independent grassroots trade union in the United Kingdom established in London in 2014. Members of the union are mainly those in insecure work, such as low-wage workers in the 'gig economy' and Outsourcing, outsourced industries. The union represents those working as cleaners, carers, couriers, bar staff, security guards, architcts, designers, and charity workers. The UVW has a strong association with the Latin American community, with many members being immigrant workers from Latin America. The UVW is seen as being much quicker to call strike and as more confrontational toward employers than larger and more traditional unions in the UK. Demonstrations held by the UVW are known for having a celebratory atmopshere. Cleaners And Allied Independent Workers Union
The Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU) is an independent grassroots trade union which represents cleaners in Britain. The CAIWU was founded in 2016. Since 2021, the union has been led by its General Secretary, Alberto Durango. As of December 2023, CAIWU had 1,830 members. The union mainly organises precarious migrant workers, with around 90% of the CAIWU's members being immigrant workers, the majority of which are Latin Americans. In 2024, the CAIWU criticised the Starmer ministry for renegading on a promise to end outsourcing. The American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) was a national federation of labor unions in the United States that continues today as the AFL-CIO. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1886 by an alliance of craft unions eager to provide mutual support and disappointed in the Knights of Labor. Samuel Gompers was elected the full-time president at its founding convention and was re-elected every year except one until his death in 1924. He became the major spokesperson for the union movement. The A.F. of L. was the largest union grouping, even after the creation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) by unions that were expelled by the A.F. of L. in 1935. The Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) was a federation of Labor unions in the United States, unions that organized workers in industrial unionism, industrial unions in the United States and Canada from 1935 to 1955. Originally created in 1935 as a committee within the American Federation of Labor (AFL) by John L. Lewis, a leader of the United Mine Workers (UMW), and called the Committee for Industrial Organization. Its name was changed in 1938 when it broke away from the AFL. It focused on organizing Skill (labor), unskilled workers, who had been ignored by most of the AFL unions. The CIO supported Franklin D. The National Federation of Independent Unions (also known as the Confederated Unions of America) was a group of independent labor unions not affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL) or the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).
