The genus has been found in moist, shady sites at moderate elevation in the United States, China, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, and Zaire. Sporophytes were first observed in 2016 on collections in Yunnan. The genus was described by Lewis Edward Anderson Lewis Edward Anderson (June 16, 1912 – February 1, 2007) was an American botanist dedicated to the study of mosses, and was an expert on the North American bryoflora. Feathermoss
Hypnales is the botanical name of an order of Bryophyta or leafy mosses. This group is sometimes called feather mosses, referring to their freely branched stems. The order includes more than 40 families and more than 4,000 species, making them the largest order of mosses. Description Hypnales are mosses with pinnately or irregularly branched, reclining stems, with varying appearances. The stem contains only a reduced central vascular bundle, which is seen as a recent derived trait in mosses. The stems are covered with paraphyllia or pseudoparaphyllia, reduced filamentous or scaly leaves. The ordinary stem leaves are ovate to lanceolate, often with leaf wing cells. The midvein is often limited to the lower half of the leaf blade, or has completely disappeared. The cells of the leaf blade are prosenchymatic, many times longer than wide, with pointed ends interlocking. The sporophyte consists of a regularly shaped sporangium on a long stalk or seta. The spores are distribut ...

Hypnum
''Hypnum'' is a genus of mosses belonging to the family Hypnaceae. The genus has cosmopolitan distribution. A common name sometimes used for ''Hypnum'' moss is "carpet moss". Distribution ''Hypnum'' species are found on all continents except for Antarctica. Species are typically found in temperate regions. Habitat ''Hypnum'' species are typically found in moist forest areas on rotting logs, while some species are aquatic. Species can also be found living on soil, rocks, and live trees. Identification Identifying moss species in the field to the genus ''Hypnum'' by using a hand lens is considered quite feasible since most ''Hypnum'' species share common features with one another. A very useful defining characteristic of ''Hypnum'' mosses are their leaves which are often falcate-secund (meaning that they are sickle-shaped and point to one side of the plant). Another distinguishing characteristic of ''Hypnum'' mosses is the thick, green mats that they form, which earns t ...

Hypnum Cupressiforme
''Hypnum cupressiforme'', the cypress-leaved plaitmoss or hypnum moss, is a common and widespread species of moss belonging to the genus ''Hypnum''. It is found in all continents except Antarctica and occurs in a wide variety of habitats and climatic zones. It typically grows on tree trunks, logs, walls, rocks and other surfaces. It prefers acidic environments and is fairly tolerant of pollution. It was formerly used as a filling for pillows and mattresses; the association with sleep is the origin of the genus name ''Hypnum'' (from Greek ''Hypnos''). It is a small to medium-sized moss about 2–10 cm long. It is pleurocarpous, having prostrate, creeping stems which form smooth, dense mats. The stems are branched and covered in overlapping leaves giving the impression of a cypress tree. The stem leaves are long and thin measuring 1.0-2.1 mm by 0.3-0.6 mm. They are concave and sickle-shaped, tapering towards the tip. The branch leaves are smaller and narrower than t ...
