The fleet of hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, with 8.5 million units sold through December 2023, is the second largest in the world after Japan. American sales of hybrid electric vehicles represented about 36% of the global stock of hybrids sold worldwide through April 2016. Sales of hybrid vehicles in the U.S. began to decline following the 2008 financial crisis, and after a short recovery, reached its peak in 2013 with almost 500,000 units sold and a record market share of 3.19%, but began to decline again in 2014 due to 2010s oil glut, low gasoline prices and increased sales of plug-in electric cars. The market share slightly recovered in 2019 to 2.3%, and 3.2% in 2020. Since their inception in 1999, a total of 5,803,917 hybrid electric automobiles and sport utility vehicles have been sold in the country through 2020.
