Hurtigruten
''Hurtigruten'' (), formally Kystruten Bergen-Kirkenes ("coastal route Bergen-Kirkenes"), is a Norwegian public coastal route transporting passengers that travel locally, regionally, and between the ports of call, and also cargo between ports north of Tromsø. Hurtigruten provides daily, year-round, and consistent traffic between Bergen and Kirkenes with 34 ports of call on northbound and 33 ports of call on southbound sailings. The Ministry of Transport and Communications in Norway has set minimum capacity requirements of 320 passengers, 120 berths, and cargo for 150 Euro-pallets. The current agreement with the privately held company Hurtigruten AS entered into force on 1 January 2012 and expired on 31 December 2019, with an optional 1-year extension. Since 2021, Havila Kystruten AS has operated alongside Hurtigruten AS on the coastal route. Hurtigruten AS
Hurtigruten AS is a Norwegian coastal ferry service and cruise line headquartered in Oslo, Norway. It is the larger of two companies currently operating ''Hurtigruten'', the coastal ferry service along the Norwegian coast from which it takes its name. The CEO is Hedda Felin. History Hurtigruten AS is the result of a merger between the previous operators of the Hurtigruten service, Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap (TFDS) and Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab (OVDS). TFDS was founded in 1866, and OVDS was established in 1868. The two companies merged in March 2006 to form Hurtigruten Group ASA, and twelve months later the merged entity assumed the name Hurtigruten ASA. Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab and the company founder, Richard With, pioneered the Norwegian Coastal Express in 1893, and Hurtigruten has continuously served the route since then. MS Finnmarken (2001)
MS ''Finnmarken'' (call sign LDBE), formerly known as MS ''Otto Sverdrup'', is a Norwegian coastal ship owned and operated by Hurtigruten ASA. It was built in 2002 at Kværner Kleven, Ulsteinvik, Norway, and cost around 750 million Norwegian Kroner (nok). It was part of the Hurtigruten coastal route travelling between Bergen and Kirkenes from 2002 to 2009. In 2010 it was leased as a hotel ship in Australia. The ship returned to Norway in 2012 as a part of the coastal route. Since 2024, it has sailed bi-weekly from Hamburg to the North Cape and back as part of Hurtigruten's Signature product. Between 2021 and April 2025 it operated under the name ''Otto Sverdrup''. It was renamed to MS ''Finnmarken'' in April 2025. MS ''Finnmarken'' is the third Hurtigruten ship with this name. MS Midnatsol (2002)
MS ''Midnatsol'' (formerly MS ''Maud'' between 2021–2024) is a Hurtigruten AS vessel built by Bruces Verkstad in Sweden and Fosen Mekaniske Verksteder in Rissa Municipality, Norway in 2001. It is the fourth ship to sail for Hurtigruten to bear this name. She has a sister ship, , which also sails for Hurtigruten. ''Midnatsol'' was renamed ''Maud'' between 2021 and 2024. History At 04:00 on the night of 14 December 2003, the ship was on a southbound course between Ålesund and Måløy when the main power supply failed and ''Midnatsol'' lost all engine power. The ship was approaching a reef and the anchors were set out in an attempt to stop the drift, but the attempt failed. All 102 passengers were ordered to the lifeboats after an attempt to connect a towing hawser from another vessel also failed. The situation was very critical and ''Midnatsol'' sent a Mayday message. MS ''Vesterålen'' is a passenger vessel operated by the Norwegian-based Hurtigruten. The vessel was constructed in Harstad, Norway in 1983. She was refitted in Bremerhaven Bremerhaven (; ) is a city on the east bank of the Weser estuary in northern Germany. It forms an exclave of the Bremen (state), city-state of Bremen. Richard Bernhard With (18 September 1846 – 9 February 1930) was a Norwegian ship captain, businessman, and politician for the Liberal Left Party. He is known as the founder of the shipping companies Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab and Hurtigruten. Background Richard Bernhard With was born at Tromsø in Troms, Norway. He was a son of shipmaster Sivert Regnor With (1810–97) and his wife Anne Bergitte Dahl (1814–ca 1875). His father was of Netherlands, Dutch descent and became a pioneer in shipping from Tromsø. With took the mate's examination in Trondheim during 1864, and then spent eight years at sea. In 1873 he settled in Risøyhamn as a merchant. In September the same year he married Oline Sophie Wennberg (1844–1878) in nearby Andenes. They had the child Nanna With in 1874. Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap or TFDS is a defunct Norwegian shipping company that also has activities in public transport and tourism. Based in Tromsø the company was one of the two operators of the Coastal Express and also operated a number of car ferries and passenger ferries, primarily in Troms.
