Humanitarian Corridors
Humanitarian Corridors is a partnership of European religious organisations, initially Italian ones, that sponsors refugees and helps them move to Europe. The partnership won the European Nansen Refugee Award in 2019. Membership Initial members of the partnership were Sant’Egidio Community, Caritas Italiana, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy, the Waldensian Table, working with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior. The partnership was later expanded to France. History The organisation was formed in 2015 following the 2013 Lampedusa migrant shipwreck. As of 2020, the partnership had moved 2,700 refugees and displaced people from Lebanon, Ethiopia, Jordan, and Niger to Europe, with over 2,200 of those to going Italy. Nansen Refugee Award
The Nansen Refugee Award is a medal issued annually by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to an individual, group, or organization in recognition of outstanding service to the cause of refugees, displaced, or stateless people. The award was established by UNHCR the organizations first High Commissioner, Gerrit Jan van Heuven Goedhart 1954 as a tribute to Fridtjof Nansen. Fridtjof Nansen was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, explorer, and League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the award was established in honour of his work to support refugees. Van Heuven Goedhart felt that creating an award would increase the world's attention to the needs of refugees and increase global refugee aid. The inaugural awardee was Eleanor Roosevelt in 1954. Caritas Italy () is an Italian charitable organisation. It was established by the Italian Bishops' Conference to promote overall human development, social justice, and peace, especially focusing on helping the poorest members of society. 2013 Lampedusa Migrant Shipwreck
On 3 October 2013, a boat carrying migrants from Libya to Italy sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa. It was reported that the boat had sailed from Misrata, Libya, but that many of the migrants were originally from Eritrea, Somalia and Ghana. An emergency response involving the Italian Coast Guard resulted in the rescue of 155 survivors. On 12 October it was reported that the confirmed death toll after searching the boat was 359, but that further bodies were still missing; a figure of "more than 360" deaths was later reported. A second shipwreck occurred from Lampedusa on 11 October, within the Maltese search and rescue zone, but closer to Lampedusa.
