High Steel
''High Steel'' is a 1965 short National Film Board of Canada documentary film directed by Don Owen about Mohawk Ironworkers from Kahnawake building New York City skycrapers. Synopsis Featuring breathtaking sequences of workers walking along narrow steel beams high above street level, ''High Steel'' is based largely on the experiences of one Mohawk ironworker working in Manhattan, Harold McComber. The film contrasts the daring work of McComber and his coworkers in the skies above New York City with life back home in Kahnawake. It also explains how the Mohawk people living across the Saint Lawrence River from Montreal first gained their reputation for high steel work in the late 19th century by working on a railway bridge that ran through their land. Don Owen (filmmaker)
Don Owen (September 19, 1931 – February 21, 2016) was a Canadian film director, writer and producer who spent most of his career with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). His films '' Nobody Waved Good-bye'' and '' The Ernie Game'' are regarded as two of the most significant English Canadian films of the 1960s. Early life Owen was born and raised in Toronto and became interested in film at a young age, mainly, he said, because there was nothing to do on Sundays but go to the two films shown by the Toronto Film Society. He intended to become a poet but studied anthropology at the University of Toronto. To earn extra money while he was working on his graduate degree, he got a job as assistant director on the Sidney J. Furie film '' A Cool Sound from Hell''. The Locarno International Film Festival is a major international film festival, held annually in Locarno, Switzerland. Mohawk skywalkers is a nickname for Mohawk ironworkers and other construction workers who have helped construct buildings and bridges in American and Canadian cities including New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Detroit, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Mohawk workers have contributed to the construction of iconic structures across North America including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Sears Tower, the CN Tower, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the United Nations Building, and the Twin Towers. 18th Canadian Film Awards
The 18th Canadian Film Awards were held on May 6, 1966 to honour achievements in Canadian film. For the first time, CFA management decided to present the awards on television. The Directors Guild of Canada which, in another first, was presenting CFA awards, voiced what was on everyone's minds: the fear that a poorly-presented show would cause irreparable harm to the CFAs and the industry. After much debate, it was decided that they would go ahead with the live broadcast, which aired coast-to-coast on CBC Television and was hosted by comedian Rich Little. The telecast was plagued by technical difficulties and criticism was harsh, with journalists and industry members calling it "the poor-man's Oscars".
